You Win or You Die: Jaime Lannister

Now, we’re getting to the nitty gritty of the characters. The characters that will pack a punch if they die, that will cause fans to cry and to question the show. These are the characters that are going to be the most divisive, and hardest for me to write. So let’s start with someone that is supposedly going to be in the last episode of the show: Ser Jaime Lannister.

Why Jaime will die: Jaime’s been through a lot, and he’s an incredibly weaker fighter than he was at the beginning of the show, but he’s still here. In his current lawsuit against his former manager, it has come out that actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau appears in all 6 episodes of the final season. While that’s encouraging for Jaime fans, it wouldn’t be shocking for at least one major character to die in the series finale. I’d honestly expect nothing less than to see a couple of beloved characters die in the last episode, and if Jaime is still around, he’ll be a prime candidate to fit that role. There’s also the whole Valonqar theory that many people believe will result in Jaime killing Cersei, which could possibly warrant the Mountain killing Jaime. Another candidate to kill Jaime would be Euron Greyjoy, assuming he lives long enough to see Jaime again. Euron and Jaime have had interaction before and the two really didn’t get along. Plus Cersei is out for revenge against Jaime and could promise Euron her hand in marriage should Euron kill Jaime. Ultimately though, I could see Jaime sacrificing himself for a Stark, whether it be Arya or Bran, but Bran would be the most emotional. After all, Jaime pushing Bran out of the window is what started the feud between the Lannisters and Starks and led to many Stark deaths. All in all, if Jaime is to die, the only proper way to do it would be to sacrifice himself and have his character really come full circle.

Why Jaime will live: Jaime could survive the show, though it would be very surprising if he did. If he does though, it would be because of his military commanding skills, and he would have to improve on his swordsmanship. With the Army of the Dead coming, Jaime is going to be pivotal to defending Winterfell and the North, even if he does show up alone. Jaime knows what is coming for him, and knows it could kill him; however, he also knows that going to help is his best chance of survival. Should they defeat the Army of the Dead, I believe Jaime will be the one to kill Cersei, and if he does that, he very well could survive the show. Jaime has survived a lot, being a Stark prisoner and a Bolton prisoner, losing his hand, defeating the Tullys, and going against Daenerys and her dragons firsthand. Really, it’s surprising Jaime has made it this far. But since he has, we can come to the assumption that maybe he just might live till the end of the show, and all of us who love his character will get a happy ending!

Jaime’s Survival Chances: While all of this talk would make you think that I believe Jaime lives through the season, I don’t. I think he’s a goner, for sure actually. His character arc is meant for him to sacrifice himself for someone else, preferably Bran Stark. While I love Jaime, he really did start this war, and he’s got to pay for it. Really though, it depends on the way the show goes in regards to the Army of the Dead. If they march on Winterfell early on, which I think they will, Jaime could die then defending Bran, Arya, or even Brienne of Tarth. However, if he survives, I could see his death coming as a result of killing Cersei, whether it be a suicide mission, or the Mountain killing Jaime in retaliation, or Euron killing Jaime. I just really don’t see Jaime finishing the season alive, and that’s why I’m giving him a 7% chance of surviving Season 8.
