After a three year long wait, several thousand tweets, and even a massive banner at a professional soccer match the Snyder Cut is finally happening. If you’re not aware of the controversy, first of all congratulations, I’ll do my best to briefly fill you in.
the History
Director Zack Snyder had to step away from 2017’s Justice League due to a tragedy in the family and Joss Whedon was tapped to fill his shoes and finish the movie. There were a lot of reshoots and an excessive budget to remove a certain Mr. Cavill’s mustache, but the movie was finished and released to audiences. It was met with mixed reviews, and almost immediately fans started to ask what Zack Snyder’s true vision of the film would look like. From there #releasethesnydercut became a powerful force online. There was a lot of back and forth, some saying the cut didn’t exist or never would exist while others vehemently claimed that it was real and a possibility. Finally the latter was proven true when earlier this year Snyder announced that the Snyder Cut would indeed be released as an exclusive for HBOMax in 2021 (prompting my immediate subscription).
Today
The DCFandome panel started off with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, and Gal Gadot reading questions to Zack about the process of finishing his version of the film. Zack responded with his trademark reverence for the source material and confirmed that both Flash and Cyborg will have a larger part in the coming feature than the original release.
Zack then asked questions to a few super-fans who had helped to get the #releasethesnydercut movement going before getting straight to the point and showing us a very glossy new trailer for his 4 hour superhero epic.
the Trailer
The trailer is set to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and starts with a spine-tingling shot of the one and only Darkseid. Next we see a destroyed city-scape with a “Justice League” banner in the foreground and parademons flying amongst growing fire pits. We see hints of Vic Stone’s original backstory as a football star in Gotham as well as his father Silas’ originally intended death. Continuing the cavalcade of new footage is Barry Allen as he rescues Iris West and again as he, presumably, tries to run back in time. Steppenwolf’s redesigned look is exceptional. Oh, and did I mention BLACK SUIT SUPERMAN?! There is so much to unpack in this trailer; I sincerely can’t put it all here in words.
Check out the trailer and stick with GVN as we continue to keep you up on everything there is to know!
I’ve worked my whole life to become a comic book illustrator, writer, and stand-up comedian. Batman and Captain Benjamin Sisko helped put a good head on my shoulders. I spent most of my childhood saving Hyrule and the Mushroom Kingdom and seeing the Justice League save all of creation time and time again. I live in Johnson City, TN with my wife Kary and daughter Laila enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery and occasional show. Three puppies round out the family and take up the rest of the time that isn’t spent debating which Wes Anderson or Studio Ghibli movie to watch. I spend an inordinate amount of time binge watching SVU, Futurama, and Letterkenny, and when I’m not watching I’m listening to “My Brother, My Brother, and Me” or playing the occasional game of D&D. If there’s a nerdy endeavor out there, I’ve probably at least tried it.
