While Zazie Beetz became a scene chewing fan-favorite with her performance as the probability altering mutant Domino in this year’s Deadpool 2, the young actress had originally auditioned to play a different mutant who could battle up a “storm” in an earlier X-Men film.
Beetz was recently asked if there was any other Marvel character she would like to play while speaking on a panel at ACE Comic-Con in Chicago this weekend. The actress then revealed she had auditioned to play the young Storm for 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Unfortunately, the part eventually went to Alexandra Shipp.
When I was a kid, I remember, in terms of characters, people would always be like, ‘You should be Storm.’ I auditioned for young Storm, actually, and I didn’t get it,” explained Beetz. “Growing up I always had an association with her. I mean, obviously, because being a young black woman, that was the one I associated with. But I think that would have been a little fantasy of mine to do that and sort of a nostalgic thing for me to try. So yeah, I’d say Storm.
As it turned out, Shipp actually reprised her role as Storm in a brief, silent cameo in Deadpool 2. However, she didn’t share any scenes with Beetz’s Domino. In the meantime, Beetz is helping Joaquin Phoenix clown around in the middle of principal photography for Todd Phillips’ upcoming Joker origin film.
On a side-note, when Beetz found out that Shipp had to shave her head for the role, she wasn’t that disappointed that she missed out on that particular part. How do you think Zazie Beetz would have done as Storm in the X-Men? Share your Mutant assessment with us at GVNation.
