Let me start this article by saying that Chris Evans of Defending Jacob and Tom Pelphrey of Ozark season three were robbed at the Emmy’s. 100% robbed. Especially Pelphrey, who gave one of the most intense and powerful performances I had ever seen in TV. Ozark was nominated, as was Laura Linney. So…how did they miss Pelphrey? I’m getting frustrated all over again, but those who decide who gets nominated for an Emmy did get a few things right. Such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and much of its cast being nominated. Mark Ruffalo definitely deserved his Emmy nomination for HBO’s I Know This Much is True. And I’m happy Netflix’s Unorthodox is getting some love.
Okay, now to the rest. Many which you expected to get nominations. (Even though I though Evans and Pelphrey were going to get nominated). It should come as no surprise that HBO’s Watchmen leads the Emmy’s with 26 nominations. If you’ve watched the show, you of course agree that it deserves every bit of recognition it gets. In fact, it was so powerful that it pretty much did one season, dropped the mic, and walked away – knowing no one else could ever really do it as well as they did.
We are pleasantly surprised, though; to see Disney+’s The Mandalorian get 15 Emmy nominations. This is definitely something I can get behind. This space Western really did a fantastic job in telling a Star Wars story without making it feel like something we’ve seen before. Pedro Pascal played the titular character and the show was helmed by Jon Favreau. Baby Yoda became a cultural phenomenon from this show. And Giancarlo Esposito made such an impact in the two episodes he was in, he nabbed a nomination. Congratulations, The Mandalorian!
