‘I Know This Much is True’ Finale Review: Dominick Learns The Truth and How to Forgive Himself

Let me start by saying that episode six of HBO’s ‘I Know This Much is True’ is the best episode in the entire miniseries. This is saying a lot, considering I’ve praised Mark Ruffalo on his duel performance in the show. Still, episode six was really well-done and a perfect bookend to this very dramatic and intense series. If you are a fan of the novel, there were some changes made, but I overall liked the direction that they decided to take. If Ruffalo does not earn an Emmy nod for this performance, I will certainly question the nomination process.

I will say that John Procaccino should also get some sort of Emmy nod this season. Episode six heavily dealt with Dominick’s relationship with Ray. As well as his need to find out who his father and trying to figure out if that role went to his stepfather. Who, had not been perfect, but had always been there. The answer given at the end of the episode had certainly been built up throughout the season, but was enough of a surprise that hit really well.

If you are familiar with the book, you know that something happens to Thomas. And although it is tragic, it also gave Dominick the ability to heal himself. Not only was he able to find forgiveness within himself, but able to move on and repair a lot of the hurt that he’s been feeling for so long. Dominick has been hot-headed this entire show and his anger certainly boils over at some point, but it was what he needed to finally make the journey towards healing. Though, I believe Dominick will always need someone to take care of, it is nice to see he includes himself in that journey.

Dominick’s Healing

There is so much I can speak of, but I don’t want to spoil too much. I will say that I do wish that most episodes were as substantial as this one was. A lot happened in episode six and many moments were pretty heartbreaking. At the same time, they were necessary moments for Dominick. Dominick is someone who holds so much weight on his shoulders and you feel, at moments; this will never change. Episode 6 is very therapeutic for Dominick, who finally sees that the sins of his grandfather do not and should not dictate his life. It’s a lot of healing and I feel that a lot paid off in this finale, for those, like myself; who have watched the show every week.

Rating: 4.5/5

Overall, everyone in the series did a phenomenal job. Not only was Ruffalo magnificent in his duel role, but this show would not be possible without Rosie O’Donnell, Melissa Leo, Rob Huebel, Micheal Greyeyes, Archie Panjabi, and as I said, Procaccino. Episode 6 was truly his episode, just as much as it was Ruffalo’s. And it was also great to understand the Drinkwater storyline more and if there was a second season, I’d love to see more interactions between Dominick and Ralph. Though, I know this is just a miniseries. I know this much is true.

Please make sure you check out this wildly dramatic and intense show. I promise the story all comes together in the end and it’s a wonderful payoff. It’s a powerful series about family and unearthing the secrets of your past. All six episodes are now available on HBO Max.
