A man in a hat is standing in a field.

Oppenheimer is ruling this award season as the latest Christopher Nolan movie can now also write thirteen BAFTA nominations behind its name. On Thursday, the 18th of January, the EE BAFTA Film Awards nominations lists were revealed. It was announced that the film about the ‘father of the atomic bomb’ has been nominated for Best Film, Director, Leading Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Supporting Actress and Actor (Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr.), among others. Close behind Oppenheimer follows Poor Things with eleven nominations, including Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, and Leading Actress (Emma Stone). Weirdly enough, Yorgos Lanthimos wasn’t nominated in the Director category.

No matter how impressive these nominations are, the biggest talking points of this morning’s announcement are undoubtedly the snub of Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers) in the Leading Actor category, Lily Gladstone’s (Killers of the Flower Moon) absence in the Leading Actress category and the lack of Barbie’s pink in multiple important categories. Greta Gerwig’s latest feature only gets five nominations, including the ones for Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling) and Leading Actress (Margot Robbie). Like Lanthimos, Gerwig didn’t make it on the Director shortlist.

With five nominations and the absence of its director in the Director category, Barbie ties with Saltburn. Apart from nominations in the many acting categories (Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike and Jacob Elordi), the movie is nominated in the Outstanding British Film and the Original Score categories.

The movie which has been able to redeem most of its longlist slots, is Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, as it only lost one of its longlist nominations. Representing the feature in the Supporting Actress category is Sandra Hüller, who is a double nominee as she’s also nominated in the Leading Actress category for her performance in Anatomy of a Fall. The film also gains nods in categories such as Director, Best Film and Film not in the English Language.

The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will take place on the 18th of February at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with David Tennant hosting the ceremony.
