31 Days of Horror: ‘THE THING’ (1982) Review

1982 ‘The Thing’

John Carpenter is a genius in the horror/suspense genre. No matter what movie it is, whether it is The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, or Halloween. His films will leave you speechless that’s how much of an impact John Carpenter has in the horror/suspense fanbase.

The Thing is an excellent mold of horror and suspense in terms of storytelling but what it’s lacking is the visual impact. Yes, I know it was made in the eighties, but some movies in the seventies and eighties still hold up in today’s standards. Such as Aliens, The Shining, E.T. Drunken Master, and more.

The one thing that I can appreciate most of John Carpenter’s The Thing. The overdramatic of the blood and the unsettling atmosphere of the entire film. In that respect, it reminds me of anime.

The talent in this movie is incredible. You got Kurt Russel, who has done so many movies in his career. Keith David, who, to be honest, does not get enough recognition within the film world. If nothing else, you should watch The Thing because of the talent and, of course, John Carpenter, one of the masters of horror.

The visual is lackluster for today’s standards, but it still gets the job. The abnormal special effects within The Thing shows how unsettling the movie is from beginning to end. This is not a movie for everyone, especially if you have a weak stomach.

In terms of entertainment for me, it would be around a 7.5/10, and in terms of storytelling, I will give it a 9/10. The acting is still good, the visuals are outdated, but it still gets to the point. If you are a horror fan and you love weird stuff, this is the movie for you.
