Smartphones are everywhere these days considering, as of 2024, there were around 4.88 billion smartphone users globally.

That’s approximately 60.42% of the worldwide population. Meanwhile, smartphone shipments worldwide expanded 6.4% year-over-year in 2024, with the annual tally coming in at 1.24 billion shipments. For the final quarter of 2024, the tally was 331.7 million units, according to IDC.

When it comes to smartphone brands, the leaders are Android and iPhones. As of November 2024, 71.42% of the worldwide smartphone market — with north of 3 billion active devices — was made up of Android users. And 28.58% of the worldwide smartphone market — with north of 1 billion active devices — was made up of iPhone users.

Smartphone owners are typically loyal to the brands they buy. Even so, owners sometimes change things up for one reason or another.

But what can you expect if switching from an iPhone to an Android? Here are four of the biggest challenges you might face.

    1. iMessage & FaceTime Compatibility

If you’re an iPhone user and love popular apps like iMessage and FaceTime, it might take time to get used to an Android smartphone. You won’t find these apps on Android devices.

While you can find comparable options on Google Play, it might take some time to get used to these alternate messaging apps.

    1. Transferring Data & Apps

Another possible source of frustration is transferring apps from your iPhone to your Android smartphone. The good news is it’s possible to transfer some data from one to the other. So, if you have photos and contact information on your iPhone, chances are you can use the Switch to Android app to perform the transfer relatively seamlessly.

However, transferring apps purchased on the App Store to an Android device is a no-go. While some apps are available on both the Apple Store and Google Play, that doesn’t mean you can transfer an app from your iPhone to your Android smartphone.

You’ll want to understand the ins and outs of an iOS to Android transfer before committing to swapping smartphones.

    1. Learning New Features

Yet another possible source of frustration is the learning curve when switching from an iPhone to an Android. Again, consumer loyalty for owners of both brands is high. But going from an iPhone to an Android might take some getting used to.

According to Tom’s Guide, iPhones are all about simplicity. Meanwhile, Androids permit more customization and allow users to personalize their smartphones.

Giving up your iPhone for an Android might require an adjustment period since you’ll have customization possibilities you lacked with your iPhone.

    1. Apple Pay vs. Google Pay

As of last year, 744 million users worldwide used Apple Pay. Another source says the U.S. had 60.2 million Apple Pay users last year. If you’re an iPhone user and love using Apple Pay, you’ll have to adjust to using Google Pay. The problem is that Google Pay isn’t as widely accepted as Apple Pay. So, you might face situations where Google Pay isn’t accepted.

You’ll want to factor that into your decision-making process before deciding whether to switch from an iPhone to an Android.

While smartphone owners tend to stick with the brands they buy, that doesn’t mean they won’t switch things up. Whether you want to try something new or due to dissatisfaction, you might choose to make such a switch.

You’ll want to keep these potential pain points in mind if thinking about going from an iPhone to an Android. While you might stick with the brand you have, sometimes change is good.
