The World Is Not Enough (2000)
The 1999 movie is arguably one of the weaker James Bond movies. Yet, its video game version hits almost all the right spots. The World Is Not Enough had pretty big shoes to fill, though. It was the first Bond game to be released on the N64 since cult classic GoldenEye. So, not to pale in comparison, the developers decided to use the same ingredients.
The World Is Not Enough brings nothing new gameplay-wise. But it balances its lack of imagination with enhanced graphics and smoother frame rates. And even an incompetent AI doesn’t bring down this solid entry.
Agent Under Fire (2001)
Most Bond games base their storyline on a movie entry, or they draw elements from one of Ian Fleming’s books. Agent Under Fire chose a different path. The game’s arc is entirely unrelated to the movies. Its developers even went as far as to design their character using the likeness of English actor Andrew Bicknell, instead of Pierce Brosnan.
They also experimented with the gameplay. In Agent Under Fire, the player’s choices affect the way they complete their objectives. As a result, straying from a linear path gives a lot of replay value to the missions. You can either go for brute force or sneak into buildings unbeknownst to the enemy. And in the action department, the car chases at the wheel of the Aston Martin are some of the best of all Bond entries.
Nightfire (2002)
Released one year after Agent Under Fire, Nightfire builds upon the solid foundations of its predecessor. The game continues the story’s arc without taking away any agency from the player. Its ambitious action-packed scenes and cinematic cutscenes only add to the atmosphere.
Yet, Nightfire particularly stands out in multiplayer mode. Fans have appraised its top-notch cast of playable characters. The player can indeed unlock classic favorites, such as Renard and Jaws.
GoldenEye 007 (2010)
Only three Bond games were released in the 2010s. And GoldenEye 007 was merely a reimagining of the 1997 super hit. Still, the entry deserves some praise for its enhanced HD graphics and its introduction of an online multiplayer mode.
Yet, it missed the opportunity to recreate some iconic moments from the movie, such as the casino scene when Bond plays baccarat with Xenia. Just like Fallout: New Vegas or Red Dead Redemption, it could have brought on some fun casino mini games. GoldenEye 007 is the highest-rated James Bond game on Metacritic for a reason. Apart from Mario games, it remains the best-selling entry on the N64. Simply put, it set the gold standard for Bond games, as well as first-person shooters.
GoldenEye 007’s split-screen multiplayer mode was perhaps its most lasting feature. Its influence reached far beyond Bond fans to revolutionize gaming. As such, there’s no surprise this cult N64 classic ranks among the greatest FPS games ever.
