Oh, what a time to be a gamer. Next year is shaping up to be a non-stop festival of big releases.
From superhero bonanzas to wizarding fantasies. Classic fighting games to open-world RPGs that will become the benchmark for years to come. And remakes to scare us all over again.
No matter your favourite genre, there’s something for everyone in 2023. That is why we have put together a handy guide of 7 games that we’re eagerly expecting to be released in 2023. Our list will help you stay up-to-date. So read on and mark the dates!
1. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
TBC 2023, PS5
Double the web-slinging, double the fun!
After delivering one of the best superhero games with Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018, Insomniac Games gave us the perfect PlayStation 5 launch title with Miles Morales: Spider-Man. Now, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is primed for release next year exclusively for PS5.
While information is still scarce, the one-and-half-minute-long trailer revealed last year was enough to drum up excitement. We see both Peter Parker and Miles Morales teaming up to dispatch some goons, hopefully hinting that both Spider-Men will be playable. The trailer also teases a villain that sounds a lot like Kraven the Hunter. Even better, the trailer ends with a glimpse of Venom.
According to a tweet from Insomniac Games, they are “making good progress and it’s still slated for 2023.”
2. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League
Spring 2023, PS5, Xbox Series X, PC
Marvel covered. How about some DC superhero action now?
Rocksteady, the developers of the acclaimed Arkham series, will present their first title since 2015’s Arkham Knight. And it’s Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. You will control the titular Suicide Squad, represented by Harley Quinn, King Shark, Deadshot, and Captain Boomerang.
If the trailer is anything to go by, expect some cooperative gameplay with oodles of humour. Rocksteady has confirmed that the game is set in the Batman: Arkham universe and will continue the storylines.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad film reintroduced the chaotic anti-heroes last year. And Rocksteady can capitalise on the interest with this title. Who doesn’t want to see Harley Quinn bash an evil Superman with her bat?
3. Hogwarts Legacy
February 10, 2023, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X
This is a treat for the Potterheads. Set in the wizarding world centuries before Harry Potter, Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world RPG that lets you create your own fifth-year wizard-in-making.
You will attend Hogwarts during the 1800s, and choose your wand and the house. You will be able to take several classes and learn spells. But there is a lot more role-playing to do. You will use the knowledge to fight magical beasts and other spellcasters outside the Hogwarts walls.
The gameplay footage so far shows mechanics with a lot of depth. If nothing else, exploring an accurately recreated Hogwarts is worth the price of admission alone.
4. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
May 12, 2023, Nintendo Switch
The first murmurs of Breath of the Wild 2 were enough to send gamers into a frenzy. The critically-acclaimed BOTW set new standards for open-world gaming, and the sequel looks ready to improve the formula further.
Tears of the Kingdom adds new abilities and a beautiful setting, allowing gamers to explore the skies above. The verticality and cutting-edge physics will provide players with a lot of freedom in exploration and combat.
Tears of the Kingdom was initially scheduled to release in 2022. Knowing Nintendo, the delay can only mean a more polished game will hit our Switch screens next year.
5. Street Fighter 6
TBC 2023, PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, PC
Street Fighter fans have waited seven years for the new title. And Street Fighter 6 seems to be worth the wait.
The title seems to be a step towards the glory days of fighting games. There is an impressive opening roster. The visual style is a throwback to 90’ hip-hop. And the control options will suit both newcomers and veterans of the series.
The game boasts three game modes. The classic old-school action of Fighting Ground, and the multiplayer contests of Battle Hub. There is also a single-player campaign mode, that lets you create a comprehensive original character and put them in Metro City.
Speaking of mechanics, fans are thrilled by the new Drive system. It will add a risk-reward system that will make each moment count.
6. Starfield
TBC 2023, Xbox Series X, PC
If you don’t understand the hype for Starfield, think about this. It is Bethesda’s first new project not named Fallout or Elder Scrolls.
Starfield looks set to put Bethesda back on the RPG throne. It is an open-world RPG set in space with a massive world (1,000 planets!) to explore. Not only will you create your character, but you will also make your base and the ship. You can also form your crew, adding to the roleplaying options.
Starfield can be played in both first and third-person perspectives.
7. Resident Evil 4/Dead Space
March 24, 2023/January 27, 2023, PS5, Xbox Series X, PC
You may call this cheating, but we can’t choose between these two highly-anticipated modern remakes of classic horror titles.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is expected to retain the essence of the original while modernising the gameplay. Given the streak Capcom is on with the recent Resident Evil titles, we can’t bet against them.
Motive Studios at EA, meanwhile, have also built the original Dead Space from the ground up. If you’re a fan of these two titles, expect to fall in love with terror again. If you haven’t played them, put Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space remakes on top of your wishlist.
