When we first meet Samwell Tarley in “Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things,” the fourth episode of the first season. He is the newest  recruit to the Brotherhood of the Nights Watch. He is fat, slow, and cowardly. But he is also highly intelligent, and loyal to a fault. He is sent to the wall by his father Lord Randyll Tarley who considers Sam an embarrassment to his family. He gives him the choice of the wall or being the prey in a hunt. Given those choices, he understandably choose the wall.

Upon his arrival he is immediately seen as being weak and singled out by Ser Alliser Thorne and is set upon by the other recruits. Jon Snow alone takes pity on Samwell and takes him under his protection. From there, a friendship is born. From Jon, Samwell learns how to at least defend himself with a sword, and Jon benefits from Samwells book smarts.

As the seasons have went on Samwell Tarley’s life has definitely changed. Through his travels Sam has killed a White Walker, and stood up for and made it possible for Jon Snow (Kit Harington) to lead the Night’s Watch. If that wasn’t enough, he found a cure for greyscale for Ser Jorah Mormont, and discovered the use of dragonsglass and where there was a wealth of it at Dragonstone which could be used to fend off the army of the dead. He also found time to break his vows, protect Gilly and her son Little Sam, become the proud owner of the Tarley Family Valerian Sword Heartsbane, and discover the truth about Jon Snow (Aegon Targaryen) and lineage. In fact, he is one busy man.

So with all that being said, what will happen to Samwell Tarley in the end? As much as I like the character, I fear that the last surviving male member of House Tarley, will not make it through to the end. He will go down fighting to be sure, because Samwell has discovered his inner courage. His father didn’t see it in him, but Jon did and so does Gilly. In fact, it would not surprise me if Samwell somewhere in the conflict does not surrender the family sword to someone who could wield it better than him against the Night King and his minions. However, in the end, he will join so many others. He will go down, a hero.
