Twelve years ago, Adventure Time viewers were introduced to the genderswapped versions of Finn the Human and Jake the Dog in the episode titled “Fionna and Cake.” Now, in just a couple of days, the two heroes of Ooo will lead their very own spin off show in Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake exclusively on Max! The 10-episode series follows Fionna, Cake and Simon Petrikov as they traverse the multiverse in a journey of self-discovery.
Come Along With Me, To The Multiverse!
Now I’m a huuugggee Adventure Time fan. I’ve rewatched the original Cartoon Network series many times and absolutely loved when HBO Max brought us back to the world of Ooo and beyond in the limited series Adventure Time: Distant Lands. So it’s no surprise that I was absolutely ecstatic when Warner Bros had announced a new spin off focused on the alternate universe versions of Finn and Jake. Now that I’ve had a chance to watch nearly the entire season of Fionna and Cake, I can safely say that Adam Muto and Co. did not disappoint.
The two episode premiere of Fionna and Cake is sure to make fans of the original series excited with all sorts of nods and references. Yet this series also works well as an entry point for those who are not as familiar with the land of Ooo. The series begins with our titular hero Fionna as she struggles with the mundane and exhausting routine of living in the real world. She’s at risk of losing her job, her average house cat Cake isn’t feeling well and needs to go to the vet, and Fionna is plagued by dreams and thoughts of a world that’s more magical. Lucky for her, across the multiverse, Simon Petrikov is tinkering in the realm of dark magic, and soon connects with Fionna and Cake. Together, the trio embarks on a quest across the multiverse, running into familiar friends, and surprising foes along the way.
Mathematical Moments
As mentioned earlier, the show has such awesome easter eggs for fans of Adventure Time. These references range from Fionna’s alarm clock looking awful similar to BMO, the sign for a building featuring a design that resembles Magic Man’s hat, or even something a little more on the nose like when Gary Gumball (the real world version of Prince Gumball) creating a pastry named Mr. Cupcake. Aside from all the fun nods, the show also is extremely appealing to those who have only seen maybe a couple episodes here and there from the original series. Fionna and Cake features hilarious jokes and scenarios, mature themes and amazing original songs.
Due to the original show being 13 years old, creator and showrunner Adam Muto had decided to age the show up to match the audience who grew up watching Adventure Time. This is a welcome surprise as the more mature approach to Fionna and Cake works really well. The show is a bit more graphic than the original Cartoon Network series ever was, and the characters in Fionna and Cake swear occasionally, but never to a point where the show loses the charm of it’s predecessor.
The show also features plenty of new songs, some of which were even written by the wonderfully talented Rebecca Sugar, who wrote many of the songs in the original series, including the finale song Time Adventure. After having watched these two episodes, I’m begging Warner Bros to please release the soundtrack online. The new songs for the show are just as beautiful and funny as any of the classics featured in the original Adventure Time. Later in the series there’s a song from a certain ice related character that will be stuck in your head for days. There is truly just wonderful music in this series.
The Fun Will Never End
I’m so excited for new and old fans alike to witness the series premiere of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake in the coming days. The show makes great use of the multiverse trope and will leave viewers on the edge of their seats with some insane cliffhangers and excellent story. The music is great, the visuals are fun, the returning cast is surprising and wonderful. There’s so much to love about this series. I wish I could share more of what’s to come later on in the series, but trust me, it’s absolutely going to be worth the wait. What this show has made me realize is that I never want to leave the land of Ooo and I really hope we can continue to get more and more stories with all of these fantastic characters.
Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake premieres exclusively on Max on August 31st, with 2 new episodes dropping weekly.

Ever since I was young, I had always been fascinated in film and the work that goes into them. I love animation, blockbuster hits, indie films and everything in between. Some day I’ll have the privilege of being apart of the filmmaking process.
