‘Agent’s of Shield’ Season Six: ‘Code Yellow’ Recap

Last week’s Agents of Shield spent almost all their time in space with Fitz, Enoch, Daisy and Jemma. We were able to watch as both Simmons and Daisy got completely wasted due to some colorful “puffy” alien food and a brief FitzSimmons reunion before they cruelly snatched it away. By following the pattern their establishing, it made sense that it was back to Earth with Mack, Shield, and Sarge and his merry band.

Call off the Search, We found Deke

As the episode started, it looks like they can cancel the Deke milk cartons they were probably making as he finally returned to the series. As for what he has been up to since last season, it looks like he started his own tech company by leveraging his knowledge from the future for a profit. His seeming wellspring of endless ideas impress his employees and his girlfriend Sequoia (played with great fun by Maurissia Tanchaeron, Agents of Shield Co-Showrunner).

Although it was good to see Deke again, he apparently hasn’t matured much, if any since he has been away from the team. At least he has been using his time constructively. Watching him kick Kree butt was a dead give away that something fishy was going on but when Daisy appeared you knew he was dreaming, big time in his new virtual “Framework” game called Remorath Rumble. But such is the life of a IT ‘genius.”

Bat Infestation

Meanwhile, back at Shield headquarters, Keller decides to address his relationship with Yo-Yo to the Director. Mack tells Keller there shouldn’t be a problem as long as he isn’t conflicted about doing his job. Yo-Yo, for her part wishes that Keller had discussed it with her before talking to Mack. He tells her not to worry. He’ll fight for their relationship. Not a physical fight, especially with Mack, but he will make their relationship work.

Meanwhile, Sarge and his team chase down and take out what seems to be an innocent civilian. A well placed knife brings out a crystalline structure springing out all over the man’s body, in a effect that can only be called “Ewwwww.” Before long Dr. Benson along with Yo-Yo and Keller try to find out why exactly he was killed. Upon the start of an autopsy, It is revealed that this man had a strange bird or bat-like creature inhabiting his body. It appears to be intertwining with his nerves and organs. Benson described it as resembling an insidious parasite that turns someone into a living zombie.

Keller meets with an early end

They soon find out the parasite is not dead after Yo-Yo takes out the knife that killed the host. The bat-like creature springs back to life and starts flying through the lab. As Yo-Yo and Keller are searching for it, the creature lands on Keller’s face and forcefully enters Keller through his mouth. “Ewwwww, again.” It slowly begins to take over his body. Yo-Yo wants Dr. Benson to surgically remove the creature but before that can happen, it begins to exert its control with the same crystalline structures bursting from his body. Yo-Yo realizes that the creature must be stopped and makes the hard decision to retrieve Sarge’s knife and plunge it back through Keller’s chest and into the creature. Apparently no one in Agents of Shield is meant to have a long relationship…or even a short one. Which is fair. If Fitzsimmons cant have one, no one can.

Deke meets Coulson/Sarge

Speaking of Sarge, after his killing of the Crystalline man, he has set his sights on Deke. However, it is not for the same reason as the first man. In Deke’s case, Sarge knows he is not where he belongs time wise. He means to rectify the situation.

He goes into Deke’s company meeting room to talk to Deke. Seeing who he initially believes to be Coulson is a shock. At first he believes that Shield had performed a mind wipe on him. At least until he realizes through careful questioning and a trophy jabbed into Sarge’s hand that he is NOT Coulson. He runs off to find out that one of his “employees” is actually Agent Trevor Khan of Shield. He was sent there to keep an eye on him or as he is known to Shield (Code: Yellow). Khan calls in for support and Mack and crew come to attempt to take Sarge and his team down.

Meanwhile, they place Deke on their ship for protection. However, as Mack looks about the place he sees all the Shield like tech Deke has “appropriated” for his company. Whoever wants to get Deke may have to get in line behind him. As they continue their search, May spies Butterfly and goes off in pursuit. They have a well done (as usual) choreographed fight. May makes a long distance connection, taking Butterfly out with a land Phone.

Deke to the Rescue

With Deke sequestered in the plane, Sequoia has returned to the company with an order of Boba and finds the place seemingly deserted. She calls Deke and he tells her to hide. The place is under attack. He tells her he will come back in to rescue her. Mack runs into Pax and Pax runs into Mack’s fists. Too bad for Pax. Deke comes back in to find Sequoia and they run into Mack and Jack. Mack sends Sequoia off with Agent Khan and he and Deke lead Jaco into the Remorath Rumble game where he is subdued. But not before Jaco runs into Deke’s pseudo Daisy. As Mack stares down Deke he offers Mack a percentage of the company if he doesn’t tell Daisy about that.

After taking Butterfly down, May is briefly distracted when Sarge shows up and gets the drop on her. Butterfly wanted to help her into her next life as “a really beautiful butterfly” but Sarge stopped her. Instead they drove off with May in tow in their Semi. The episode ended with “Social Media Butterfly” Sequoia showing her adventures that she captured on her phone. These included her good friend Agent Khan. Looks like it’s back to Pseudo Daisy, Deke.

Thoughts:

As I said earlier, part of the charm of this episode was the return of Deke but even more so, the fun performance by Maurissia Tanchaeron as Sequoia. Pretty sure Joss and Jed Whedon might want equal acting time after that performance.

It was good to see Mack get out from behind the “desk” and get in on the action. He’s a big man and he needs to be where the battle is. Although, at least Zeke kept Mack’s Shotgun axe in play. Even it was only in his was only in his virtual game.

Keller’s death was sad only to Yo-Yo because the audience didn’t get enough time with the character to really care. It certainly didn’t carry the impact of Fitz or Coulson’s death because the show built up those characters over a long period of time. Keller, not so much. Rest in peace agent Keller. We hardly even knew you.

Next Week’s Agents of Shield

From the blurbs of next week’s Agents of Shield episode, it seems like Sarge and his team’s mission might be similar to Shield’s. It looks like their trying to PREVENT an infestation instead of causing one. We’ll soon see. Did you enjoy Agents of Shield “Code Yellow?” Share your thoughts with us at GVNation.
