Who better to tell the story of one of the greatest competitive athletes in the history of sports than one of the greatest filmmakers in the business? Ben Affleck is back behind the camera on his latest collaboration with Matt Damon in their new movie Air, the shocking story based on the true events that gave us the iconic Air Jordans that millions of people wear today. In addition to starring in the film, Affleck and Damon are joined by Jason Bateman, Chris Tucker, Marlon Wayans, Chris Messina and Viola Davis.
The Script is a Slam Dunk
Straight from the get-go, this movie is coming at you fast. The dialogue is witty and sharp, and has you hooked. Even when there isn’t much going on on screen, you’re right in there hanging on every word. Honestly, the script might be the strongest element from this movie. Writer Alex Convery was on point with this one from start to finish and even though it’s still early, you can definitely see this one at least getting a nomination in the Screenplay categories during next year’s awards season.
The dialogue between characters such as Damon’s Sonny Vaccaro and Messina’s David Falk or every line that comes from Chris Tucker’s mouth is undeniably funny. The humor is so quick and smart that you’ll definitely be chuckling to yourself long after the credits have rolled. While the film has a good deal of humor, that does not mean the film doesn’t have it’s heavier scenes. Viola Davis as Deloris Jordan gives a wonderful performance as a woman who sees the legend that her son will become. She knows how special her son is and will become for people all over the world, so she will do anything and everything to make sure he is given the respect he deserves.

Davis shares a scene with Damon where she talks about how she gives everything she has for Jordan and then some more. This central theme pops up throughout the film in really fun ways that really reiterate just how important Michael Jordan’s mother was in the journey of his success.
Setting the Mood on the Making of The Shoe
The film does a great job of getting audiences in the right mindset for the movie. Affleck transports audiences back to the 80’s with various montages of all things 80’s. Remember Mr. T cereal? Or what about the classic “Where’s the Beef?” Wendy’s ad? What about the hits of the 80’s like “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen? Or what about when cars had phones built into them? This movie will launch you back in time and get audiences thinking back to what it was like in the 80’s and seeing Michael Jordan rise to fame. It wants you to go back and think just how insane it was to see a legend born in real time. With the constant exposure to old school logos, classic songs from the 80’s, celebrity name drops, it forces the target demographic to relive the 80’s to truly appreciate what Nike and Jordan did.

With all of this nostalgia overload and snappy dialogue, the energy of the movie is just plain and simple fun. The audience was super into the movie: every joke was landing, the emotional beats were on point, and you could feel the excitement and love in the air. When a movie is this well made and this earnest with it’s message, the audience is going to deliver that same energy right back. Even if you do not count yourself as a sports enthusiast, you will find yourself thoroughly enjoying every minute of this incredible origin story to the Air Jordans.
This Movie Scores Big
The hype for this one is real. This movie delivers on all fronts; the writing is Oscar worthy, the cast is superb, and the story is surprising. In fact, it’s so surprising, that you probably didn’t know that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a prominent figure in the journey to creating one of America’s most iconic shoes. We won’t reveal exactly how this is true, but believe us, you won’t see that twist coming!
Who knew that a story about how a shoe came to be could be so riveting? Affleck and crew deserve a huge round of applause for bringing dramas back on to the big screen in such an exciting way. We cannot wait to see what Affleck and Damon do with their new studio in the future. Do yourself a huge favor and check out Air when it comes the theaters. Just Do It.
Air will begin playing exclusively in theaters starting April 5th.

Ever since I was young, I had always been fascinated in film and the work that goes into them. I love animation, blockbuster hits, indie films and everything in between. Some day I’ll have the privilege of being apart of the filmmaking process.
