Anthony Mackie Came Close To Playing Rhodey In ‘IRON MAN’

Before Chris Hemsworth became Thor, Tom Hiddleston actually auditioned for the role before being cast as Loki. In fact it has happened several times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

  • Karen Gillan auditioned for Sharon Carter before landing the role of Nebula
  • Chadwick Boseman auditioned for Drax before he became T’Challa
  • Sebastian Stan was almost Captain America
  • Michael B. Jordan auditioned for Falcon before the role went to Anthony Mackie and he was later cast as Killmonger

And that leads us to the point of this article. Anthony Mackie reveals he auditioned for the role of Rhodey in Iron Man before it eventually went to Terrance Howard who was then replaced with Don Cheadle.

“I auditioned for ‘Iron Man’ and the director liked me, so in actor terms ‘I was up for the role,’”

While Mackie missed out on Rhodey, I think he found his calling as Sam Wilson aka Falcon. Mackie on losing out on the role of Rhodey but being cast as Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Solider

“I always wanted to work with RDJ and working with Don Cheadle was always a dream of mine. Then six months later I have a meeting with the Russo Brothers and it all worked out.”

Mackie and Sebastian Stan are set to star in their own Disney+ Marvel series, The Falcon and The Winter Solider, which debuts in March.

Do you think Mackie would have been a better Rhodey or are you glad things worked out the way they did?
