Onward by Disney and Pixar is expected to be on the top spot this weekend. After seeing the advance screening Tuesday, I have to agree. The family adventure animated movie should bring in $40 – $45 million in North America theatres. Looks like “The Invisible Man” will be vanishing from being number one.
Voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, Onward should have no trouble in being in number one in the box office. Ben Affleck, on the other hand, is projected to only bring in $6 to $10 million for “The Way Back.” Reviews are this is Affleck’s best acting in years, it just might not be enough for box office numbers. Warner Bros has not done well with Birds of Prey falling short of expectations and looks to lose money.
Onward
Onwards Pixar has already brought in $3 million globally from several early screenings. The film centers on two Elfin brothers whose father died when they were young. When they receive a magical gift on Ian Lightfoot’s (Holland) birthday, he and his brother Barely (Pratt) embark on an adventure. Pixar did an excellent job on the storyline and the computer animation of this movie. My family was on the edge of their seat the entire time. The friendly and breathtaking moments had my grandson asking if we could stay and watch it again. You will not be disappointed in this movie.
The Way Back
Affleck is getting rave reviews for “The Way Back.” The story follows an alcoholic construction worker who finds renewed life purpose. Jack Cunningham is a former high school phenom who walked away from the game. Now years later, he reluctantly accepts an offer to coach at his former high school. What he discovers is the team is in shambles. No discipline or strategy, just talent. Will this be his last shot at redemption? For Ben’s acting career I think this movie will put him back on the actors A-list.
Emma
Also, opening is the adaptation of Jan Austen’s “Emma.” It’s been in a limited release for two weeks, now going nationwide. Already bringing in $1.5 million domestically and $11.4 overseas, it’s sure to be in the top five this weekend. Emma played by Anya Taylor-Joy is a satirical take on the classic book of a young woman in 1800’s England who meddles in her friend’s love lives. As a Jane Austen fan, I am looking forward to seeing the satire of social class and how it’s done in this movie.
First Cow
Lastly is “First Cow” a drama about the travels of a 19th-century cook who follows fur trappers to the Oregon territory. Directed by Kelly Reichardt is based on the novel “The Half-Life” by Jonathan Raymond. So far reviews are from premieres are good. Rolling Stone magazine said after watching the movie: “The feeling that you’ve just witnessed a major work from a great American filmmaker is instantaneous.”
Invisible Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Call of the Wild are still out and should stay in the top ten. We’ll see if Bad Boys and Birds of Prey stay up there. I think so, booted out will more than likely be Fantasy Island and Braham’s The Boy II.
Mamma, Mimi, Michele, call out any one of those names and I will answer. There are several hats on my shelf. My passions are photography, being outside, movies, tv, pop culture and anything haunted or spooky. People are my other interest, I love meeting new people and socializing. When I lived in Savannah GA I worked as a tour guide both haunted and historical tours. I met people from all over the world, that was the best part of the job. All of this I can write about too, that’s the beauty of being a writer.
