With any sequels, fans are sure to speculate as to what will be the title for the next movie. When Avengers: Infinity War was released last April, this superhero movie was no exception.
When Infinity War was first announced, fans were told that the final two Avengers films were going to be titled “Part One” and “Part Two”. However, the Russo Brothers – who directed the films – wanted to play it safe and chose those titles as temporary placeholders with hopes that it would protect the title of the fourth installment and avoid giving away any spoilers to moviegoers. This meant that the Russo Brothers had to be extra careful when it came to questions regarding potential titles, which lead them to fabricate just a little bit for the sake of the movies.
In December 2018, the title Avengers: Endgame was finally revealed and it sent some fans to a fact-checking frenzy because, according to Comicbook.com, Joe Russo made an earlier statement and flat-out said “No” when asked if the next Avengers movie would be called Endgame.
At a recent press event, the Russo Brothers were confronted again about this “white lie” and were asked why did they not give the world a straight answer. As it turns out, they were not trying to lie – it seems like the official title wasn’t even completely set in stone at the time.
Here is what Joe Russo had to say:
“That was a year before the movie gets released, and we are constantly changing things and these are iterative and creative processes. It is impossible to commit to anything with any kind of clarity a year before you’re about to release some content. ‘Cause who knows your DP could accidentally put the title on his resume and then we throw it out. You know, like there are a million reasons why that may or may not be a title for the movie. And until we sit in a room and we watch a trailer with the title on it, then we all look at each other and say, we running with this title. That’s usually when the title sticks to a movie. So when people are asking us questions a year before release… And look, they have the right and that’s their job but we also have the right and it’s our job to protect the creative integrity of our choices. And you don’t want to be trapped into, and pressured into choices in the same way that a writer wants to feel like they’re getting accurate answers out of us – There are no accurate answers a year out!”
Hopefully, fans will appreciate the intentions of the Joe and Anthony Russo who would never lie to the dedicated fanbase of the MCU movies.
