The Marvel Creator Collection: Barry Windsor-Smith

Today,  we’re stepping into something truly special—an artistic time capsule cracked open for the first time in decades. Fantagraphics is launching its monumental Marvel Creator Collection line. Volume One brings us straight “Back to the Savage Land” with none other than acclaimed artist Barry Windsor‑Smith. Easily one of the most transformative visual storytellers ever to grace the medium.

Before Conan made him a legend, and before Weapon X redefined what superhero tragedy could look like, Windsor‑Smith was carving out his artistic identity in the pages of Marvel’s wildest and most experimental books. And now, Fantagraphics has restored that early work with a level of care and reverence that lets every line, every contour, every burst of youthful ambition shine through.

Strap in, kids. The jungle drums are beating, the dinosaurs are restless, and the art is nothing short of historic. As revealed in this Press Release from Fantagraphics:

Rediscover Legendary Artist Barry Windsor-Smith’s Early Masterworks with The Marvel Creator Collection No. 1: “Back to the Savage Land” Barry Windsor-Smith at Marvel Vol. 1

Fantagraphics and Marvel Join Forces to Collect Windsor-Smith’s Long Out-of-Print Comics

April 28th, 2026 – A master of sword and sorcery, science fiction, psychedelia, super heroics, and comedic parody — Barry Windsor-Smith has done it all. Between his groundbreaking, character-defining work on Marvel’s Conan The Barbarian and Weapon-X and his critically acclaimed 2021 graphic novel Monsters, the artist has earned his reputation as an adventurous, boundary-pushing creator. Now, Fantagraphics is partnering with Marvel to release The Marvel Creator Collection: Barry Windsor-Smith at Marvel, a three-volume series collecting the artist’s trailblazing Marvel comics. Due out on April 29, 2026, The Marvel Creator Collection No. 1: “Back to the Savage Land” will feature early pre-Conan work on X-Men, The Avengers, Doctor Strange, and Iron Man, as well as his amazing run on “Ka-Zar” in Astonishing Tales, and much more!

Fantagraphics Publisher and Co-Founder Gary Groth

I have literally been following Barry Windsor-Smith’s career since 1969 when he debuted at Marvel Comics and immediately became my 2nd favorite artist (after Jack Kirby). So, it is a distinct pleasure to have the privilege of finally presenting all the work he did for Marvel (with the exception of Conan) in a gorgeously produced 3-volume hardcover series.”

From the moment Marvel brought him to the U.S. in 1969, Windsor-Smith was a creative force to be reckoned with. A passionate devotee of Jack Kirby, Windsor-Smith’s earliest drawing at Marvel reflected that influence, but he quickly developed his own unique, eye-opening style, combining intricately detailed realism with the dreamlike lushness of art nouveau to the classicism of the Pre-Raphaelites.

This volume focuses on the earliest of his work, including memorable storylines on The Avengers, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and individual stories for Chamber of Darkness, Tower of Shadows, and Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. All new benchmarks of comics art, culminating in what may be the highlight of this period: Windsor-Smith’s creatively fecund, Conan-esque epic tale of civil war in Ka-Zar’s Savage Land.. Future volumes will trace Windsor-Smith’s career through such milestones as Machine Man and Weapon X.

    Exclusive Page Reveals

In anticipation of the book’s release, we are thrilled to share exclusive insights from the upcoming hardcover edition. These pages highlight Windsor-Smith’s journey, tracing his beginnings inspired by Kirby and showcasing how he evolved into a stylistic force that would redefine the look of fantasy comics for generations. The glimpses into the Savage Land era reveal his raw talent, increasing finesse, and the undeniable spark of a creator on the rise.

A comic book page shows a woman with a spear riding a flying creature toward a yellow fortress, with text boxes and the title "KA-ZAR, LORD OF THE JUNGLE! THE SUN GOD!" at the top. A comic book page with six panels featuring fantasy characters including a woman with a staff, a dragon, a blue-skinned figure, and a muscular man, all engaged in conversation. A comic page features Thor speaking with an elderly man in a village, battling a foe, and reflecting on the purpose of life and death. Bright colors and stylized action are prominent. A comic book page with four panels showing scenes of destruction, a woman in a feathered costume, a dinosaur, and warriors fighting amid bright colors and action lines. A colorful comic book page with six panels depicting dramatic dialogue and intense action between armored and mystical characters in a rocky, supernatural landscape.

Fantagraphics’ Marvel Creator Collection No. 1

With this first Volume, Fantagraphics’ Marvel Creator Collection No. 1 doesn’t just preserve these pages; it reintroduces them with the clarity, care, and reverence they’ve always deserved. Seeing this work restored, remastered, and displayed for comic fans reminds us how quickly Windsor‑Smith evolved from a bold newcomer to a creator whose influence still echoes across comics today.

    Thanks to Fantagraphics and Marvel

Huge thanks to Fantagraphics for opening the vault and letting us share these exclusive glimpses with you. If this preview stirred your inner comics archaeologist, wait until you hold the full volume in your hands. The Savage Land, in the capable hands of Barry Windsor-Smith, has never looked this alive.

Fantagraphics and Marvel’s Marvel Creator Collection No. 1: “Back to the Savage Land” Barry Windsor-Smith at Marvel Vol. 1 hits book stores on April 29th.
