‘Candyman’ Star Tony Todd Gives His Blessing For Jordan Peele Remake

If you were to ask any fan of the classic horror movie The Candyman, they would tell you that any thought of remaking the 1992 horror film should begin and end with the film’s titular star and fan favorite Tony Todd. If he were to sign off on the possibility of a remake, your chances of getting the fans behind a reboot of the film just increased exponentially. The folks behind Jordan Peele’s rumored remake of Candyman obviously heard because it has already earned the blessing of the star of the 1992 horror film.

Todd, who starred as Candyman in all three of the franchise installments, thought the Oscar-nominated writer and Director of Get Out could very well be the person to attempt the project. Todd talked about the proposed film in an interview with Cinema Blend

If Jordan wants to do it, do it. I know I’d rather have him do it, someone with intelligence, who’s going to be thoughtful and dig into the whole racial makeup of who Candyman is and why he existed in the first place.

Todd also expressed confidence that Peele would respect the material and those who have been involved in the franchise over the years.

I know he’ll give homage and I know that if it gets made,” he continued. “I’ll have a plate at the table one way or the other.”

Candyman was based on a  Clive Barker short story entitled The Unbidden.  It originally starred Todd and Virginia Madsen, who played a graduate student who through her studies, was investigating the “urban” legend of the Candyman in Chicago’s projects. It was during this research that she made the almost fatal mistake (for her) of saying his name five times in front of a mirror. Soon she finds herself  bring framed for the brutal deaths he was responsible for.

Tony Todd is a veteran of genre films, including the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead and the Final Destination series. He has appeared in numerous Star Trek episodes including both The Next Generation as Worf’s brother Kurn as well as Deep Space Nine, where he played the adult version of Captain Sisko’s son, Jake. He has also done voice over work as Zoom, the primary antagonist of The Flash Season 2.

Peele is still in development on a Candyman remake if it happens at all, but the support of Todd is a step in the right direction.

If the Candyman project ever takes off, does it lend some legitimacy that Tony Todd has given his approval? Share your “Urban Legend” opinions about the Candyman with us at GVNation.
