Chris Hemsworth Expresses His “exhaustion” With Playing Thor Before ‘Ragnarok’

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”20079″ img_size=”800×400″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]When you’ve played the same character of a number of films and years, it is only natural that a certain exhaustion might set in. Especially when you feel you’ve done what you can with the character. That was the position Chris Hemsworth described he was in after playing Thor over a number of pictures and especially after Thor: The Dark World. In a recent interview with Yahoo Movies UK, he explained the mindset he was in after the second Thor solo film.

…tonally, we never quite landed on what [The Dark World] should have been. It became a little too – I don’t want to say serious, but as I was shooting it, I desperately wanted to do something more fun with the character and unexpected.

His opportunity came when he made Thor: Ragnarok with Taika Waititi. In this movie, Waititi gave the actor a chance to loosen up and show the more humorous side of the God of Thunder.

Luckily, when we came into Ragnarok, I was exhausted with what I’d been doing, and a little underwhelmed by what I was putting out there,” he said, adding that it wasn’t the fault of writers or directors, but something that he was struggling with. It felt like I’d put myself in a box with what the character could do. So on Ragnarok it was about breaking all the rules. Taika… had the guts to just roll the dice, and anything goes. That was so liberating and freeing, to break away from who the character was prior.

It obviously worked as Thor:Ragnarok brought the character back from the luke warm if not negative reviews that Dark World received. It also set the stage for Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers: End Game. Perhaps that is why there is talk of another Thor film with Waititi at the helm.
