Collision Course, Part One

Last week, Mack struck a deal with Sarge. If he supplied the information to save the Zephyr and his people from the Shrikes, he would give Sarge back his truck and his crew. He supplied the solution so it seemed like Sarge had Mack over a bit of a barrel. So what did we learn in Collision Course, Part One?

Mack Makes Good on his Deal…Kind of

Apparently Mack had learned a thing or two from Coulson. He came through on part of the deal by returning his truck. However, he altered the other part as he allowed Sarge only one of his crew. In addition, he told him that he would be accompanied on his mission by both May and Daisy. Given the choice of one crew member, Sarge chooses Snow. He then warns Mack to not get in their way. Mack, for his part agrees not to leave the base. Although he does leave out the part that the Zephyr is their airborne base. Well played Mack, well played.

Deke Agrees to Help

When one of Sarge’s devices goes on the fritz, he tries to get Mack to give him Jaco as well as Snow. Instead, Mack sends Deke along. This is necessary because without FitzSimmons, he is the only one (outside of Jaco) who can repair Sarge’s “Shrike Repellent” device. Although, to get Deke to agree, Mack threatens to tell Daisy about Deke’s virtual version of her (as seen in Code Yellow). To prevent that from happening, he agrees to go, and gives Mack 10% interest in his company. (He also agrees to stop stealing Shield tech designs).

The Shrike Tower

As they drive toward their destination, Sarge shows them on the radar a crowd of shrike-infested hosts gathering in what appears to be the middle of nowhere. As previously demonstrated, they then explosively transform into a network of those crystalline structures. When complete, they form into what resembles an antenna tower.

When questioned by May and Daisy, Sarge warns them that, “She is coming, and everyone you care about is going to die.” As for how he plans to stop “her,” Sarge reveals that he has a sword that he plans to drive through her heart. While May has seen that one of Sarge’s knives can kill a Shrike. Both May and Daisy are dubious that a “sword” will be the solution, especially since he will have to get close enough to use it.

Deke and Snow Connect

Meanwhile, Snow, who has a perchance for wanting to set people free by killing them, reveals herself to have an interest in Deke. For his part, Deke appreciates Snow’s want to see his soul be… spilled out. With the loss of Sequoia, Deke was feeling lonely but if he knew more about Snow, that would be the LAST thing he would want to do.

The Jump to Earth

At the same time in space, the crew of the ship that Fitz and Jemma helped Izel obtain express their concerns about the distressed vessel surviving a space jump. While Fitz is concerned as well, he believes the risk is worth it. As it turns out, the ship makes the jump without incident (which is rather anti-climatic at this point) as Jemma and Fitz see Earth from behind the moon.

Izel explains to FitzSimmons that she has been searching for artifacts that belonged to her home world. Most recently, she thought they were on Chronica, which was destroyed in her failed attempt to locate them. The why of that she failed to disclose. Instead she told them how she is being hunted by her own ruthless adversary. It doesn’t take a lot of inference that it is Sarge who is pursuing her. As for her assailant’s motives, she explains the reason is “Because I know the truth about him,” Izel says. “I know what he really is.”

Being Jealous of Himself

Once away from Izel, FitzSimmons both realize that the artifacts Izel is looking for are the Kree monoliths. However, Jemma knew they had all been destroyed. As Jemma tells Fitz about their destruction it somehow leads into a conversation about the wedding Fitz missed. During this exchange, Jemma questions if Fitz is jealous of himself. No way THAT conversation ever had a way to turn out on a positive note.

Izel Infects the Crew

So the question remains: who or what is Izel, and what are her real motivations? This question begins to come into focus when we see Izel caressing a small shrike. Thus her identity as the “Creator” is somewhat confirmed. She proves this further when she uses her new Shrike to infest crew member Toad (the fellow who is obsessed with his colorful puffies). Apparently she has been busy as Toad and his buddy along with her zombie-like army roam the halls. For their part, Fitz and Jemma are unaware of what is going on as their ship begins its descent to Earth.

Dr. Benson’s Research Reveal

Back with Mack and crew, Dr. Benson contacts Mack about what he has learned in his research. He relays information that the creator Sarge has spoken about is a demon named Izel. In addition, just as FitzSimmons had deduced, the artifacts she is after are the Kree monoliths.

An Attempted Escape

The remainder of Sarge’s crew, Pax and Jaco, meanwhile, have been detained via chains and the containment pod, thanks to Yo-Yo. This was after an escape attempt by Pax comes up short but results in the death of a Shield Agent. (Not the best way to foster cooperation). Realizing that the Zephyr is heading right toward danger, Pax spills the beans that Sarge’s plan involves a bomb.

Have Bomb, Will Travel

Upon receiving that information, it is quickly relayed to Daisy and May, who immediately confront Sarge about the explosive and why he failed to mention it. He explains that he told them he had a backup plan in case the Sword failed. In fact, he has already armed the bomb and set the truck on auto pilot. He also warns Daisy that using her powers could set it off prematurely.

While they search for the hidden explosive, Sarge escapes to the truck roof, where he uses the same inter-dimensional portal that he used at the jewelry store. This time he uses it to step onto the Zephyr where Pax and Jaco are being held. Meanwhile, Daisy, May, Deke and Snow are left behind, trapped inside the truck which is heading toward the shrike tower. Deke has located the explosive but can he defuse it? All the while, Izel and her ship begin their approach for a landing.

More Questions than Answers

This leaves us with more questions. Will Fitz and Jemma realize what is happening on the ship in regards to Izel? Could Mack shoot down the alien ship, not knowing FitzSimmons are on board? Will he attempt to take out Sarge’s truck before the bomb with a 200-mile blast radius goes off, sacrificing May, Daisy and Deke in the cause of “saving lives?” What Are Izel’s plans for FitzSimmons once they have landed? We of course have to wait for Part 2 of Collision Course to find out.

Thoughts on Collision Course, Part One

Events are beginning to converge as this Collision Course, Part One reveals. The fact that information is being concealed is the one constant throughout the episode

Jaco and Sarge kept Pax in the dark about their escape plans.

Sarge didn’t disclose the explosive he planned to use on the Shrike Tower. Is the device he keeps having Deke fix REALLY a Shrike repellant or does it draw them in?

Jemma didn’t disclose all she knew about the Kree Monoliths to Izel or to Fitz initially.

Izel is being purposely vague on her involvement in the destruction of the Chronicoms home world. She also apparently knows about Sarge’s origins and is keeping that information to herself as well.

Lots of trust issues going on here. What it means is that the tension and drama is ratcheting up, and that is what Marvel’s Agents of Shield does best.
