Dr. Thomas Noguchi is the quintessential American success story. Foreign-born, he came to the country with hopes and ambitions and achieved success even beyond his own expectations. And yet this man, known as “the coroner to the stars” and who served as the chief medical examiner/coroner of LA County for 21 years, is a man of piety and humility. Lambasted by his contemporaries for sensationalizing celebrity deaths, the documentary Coroner to the Stars attempts to strip away fiction and provide an unvarnished and insightful account of the career of arguably the most famous coroner in the world.

In what amounts to incredible candor, Dr. Thomas Noguchi is alive and present for the documentary. His words, his account, form the basis for the film. It strips away mythic structures and rampant gossip. The film does more than shine a light on the man who performed autopsies on such icons as Marilyn Monroe and John Belushi. It is a story of bucking the so-called political establishment of his day, and enduring intense racial prejudice as a Japanese-American. And, still standing tall and proud.

Arriving in the United States in 1952, shaped by the scourge of war and inspired by his own father’s medical background, Noguchi found himself at home in Los Angeles. After starting at Orange County Hospital, he was eventually appointed LA County’s Chief Medical Examiner. An impressive feat, made doubly impressive by the fact that he was a Japanese-American holding the position.

The film documents the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as a major turning point in his career at the department. One of his first acts in response to the Kennedy killing was to ensure the senator’s body remained in Los Angeles. The phrase No More Dallas became his battle cry in response to how RFK’s brother, John F. Kennedy, did not receive a medical autopsy in Dallas, but instead, back in Washington, DC, by two deeply inexperienced pathologists. Noguchi did not want the same thing to happen under his watch for JFK’s brother.

Much of the film centers on Noguchi’s prowess at completely revolutionizing the LA County Coroner’s Office. A small anecdote, but at the time, rubber gloves were not in wide use. As a result, the underserved staff had to rewash and reuse the same heavy gloves or go gloveless for each examination. Under Noguchi’s leadership, the office transformed, with increases in staff and budget. As a result, the department became something of an envy and a standard-setting example for similar offices across the country.

Notably, the popular show Quincy, ME, starring Jack Klugman, is loosely inspired by Noguchi. In fact, filming for the show’s medical setting took place in the LA office. The show’s popularity introduced the audience to forensic pathology, largely thanks to Noguchi’s expertise in the field. Now, this matter of life imitating art is what gave Noguchi’s critics fuel.

Critics lambast him for sensationalizing celebrity death. His media-laden title as ‘speaker for the dead’ drew pushback from Hollywood heavyweights, including Frank Sinatra. Old Blue Eyes spearheaded an effort against Noguchi over his handling of actor William Holden’s autopsy and cause of death speculation. There is also his ruling in the death of Natalie Wood. His decision to rule her death accidental has led to endless debate and controversy. To date, the investigation into Wood’s death is ongoing.

By his own measure, Noguchi maintains both his professionalism and innocence. Part of the beauty of having him in this documentary is that it allows for his own commentary, rather than rampant speculation. “My effort in telling the truth is sometimes interpreted as my eagerness to reveal something of a secret.” No one can deny that the film accurately presents both arguments for and against Noguchi’s tenure. Again, having him front and center and able to speak to the charge against him lends a great deal of credibility to the audience’s understanding of the doctor.

His ruffling of feathers in both LA County political circles and among celebrities determined to protect their public images led to two civil hearings against Noguchi. Both investigations play prominent roles in the film’s examination of his work and, arguably, his controversial legacy.

And yet, despite the noise and the shine of the spotlight, Coroner to the Stars leaves us with the impression that this is a deeply learned man, indispensable to his field. In addition, a man of considerable personal character and a unique perspective on something we will one day face: death.

“Famous, or not famous, it really does not matter. As long as life begins, life ends with death. and the life of a human being ceases upon death. After death, the spiritual, or perhaps the reputation, of the person will continue. The memory the family may have continues, and that’s why we need to make sure the deceased person or the dying person needs dignity and respect.”

Inspiring and introspective words from a man who never saw himself as a coroner to the stars, but as a coroner to people.

Coroner to the Stars is currently embarking on a theatrical roadshow tour courtesy of Antenna. Full details can be found here. The film will be available on Digital platforms on July 14, 2026.
