Synopsis: This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic Dark Phoenix. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.
The “X-Men” Franchise as we know it has ended, and that is simply what Dark Phoenix achieved. The film was the last installment before the X-Men are eventually introduced into the MCU, and they made damn sure that was true. I am not saying that the film was horrible, but it sure does leave a lot to desire. For a film to be this dry and emotionless after being pushed back was shocking. The actors and actresses in the film are great, but that couldn’t save them from a lackluster script, and poor screenplay.
Sophie Turner and that cast turn in good performances, but there were moments in the story where I definitely needed more emotion. Whether this was the poor script or acting choice could be left open for debate. Jessica Chastain’s little posse’s subplot, could have been left out. They were rarely on screen and served no purpose in the film, besides for being part of the final action sequence. While we are on the topic of action sequences, the few that are in the movie have great choreography and are aesthetically pleasing to the viewer.
This installment of the “X-Men” franchise seemed like they wanted to hit a checklist for this film to bring the franchise to a close. MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD
The director made it evident that they wanted to give the X-Men more comic accurate suits, so yes finally those awful leather suits are gone. They made sure to have a death for drama’s sake (which shouldn’t have come as a shock to viewers- as it was teased in the trailers). They also wanted to make sure Magneto and Charles Xavier had some sort of peace with each other at the end of the film, riding off into the metaphorical sunset after the events that occurred, but it fails within the plot of this movie since Xavier and Magneto only had a single scene in the movie before the final shot.
All in all, I would say that I have definitely seen better films, but at the same time I have seen worse. The movie seems to waste a great cast and abruptly puts a wrap on the “X-Men” for a while, until they play a factor in the MCU. I would give the film 2.5 stars out of 5. Did you see Dark Phoenix yet?
