DCeased #4 Review (2019)

Artist: Trevor Hairsine

Written: Tom Taylor

The Daily Planet has become a beacon of hope for the living as the Anti-Life Equation sweeps the planet. What’s left of the Justice League have begun to gather there, bringing survivors and family alike. But the city is being overrun with infected humans”¦and super humans! The war for Metropolis begins!

Throughout each issue of DCeased, Tom Taylor has done a fantastic job giving hope for the readers’and also the characters than a seconds later destroys that hope. We start the issue with one of the characters in all of Dc Comics, Captain Atom, Amanda Waller, and Ray Palmer. Ray Palmer went inside the infected trying to find the cause of the infection but instead ends up being infected by the virus. Captain Atom and Amanda Waller did not know at the time, so they went on for the next assignment. While Captain Atom was doing his job, something was wrong with Captain Atom. We soon find that Ray Palmer was inside of Captain Atoms body and started tearing away Captain Atoms cells making him infected as well.  The fact that Tom Taylor can kill off a powerhouse like Captain Atom just like that shows how much of a risk taker he is with his storytelling, and that is a good thing.

Soon after, we see Clark reaching the Daily planet with Martha, remember in the last issue Pa Kent became infected. We got to see Martha’s reaction to her husband being infected, which was a stunning page. In the last panel of the fourth page, we see Ma Kent, Louis Lane, Jon Kent, and Clark, hugging and the background is all white just making them the main focus. Rain Beredo, Trevor Hairsine, and Stefano Gaudiano used the less is more approach, and it paid off big time!

Lois is calling every living being in the world, whether they are good or bad. The call even reached Themyscria where we finally see the Amazonians, but also Mera who has lost her home and family, which we say in issue three. At this point, Diana decides to go to Metropolis and help out. Meanwhile, Clark and Dinah are in Keystone City looking for Flash, and we find out that Batman got a hold of them first. Told them to hide since they will be the most dangerous people if they ever got infected. We also see that Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are still alive and flirting (thank god). For some reason, I enjoy the chemistry between Harley and Poison, which shows how great Tom Taylor is in writing his characters.

While Louis Lane is calling out to everyone, Superboy hears something and finds out that an infected Giganta is moving towards the daily planet where everyone is. Green Arrow, Superboy, Black Lighting tries to stop her, the batwing comes down and starts to shoot down Giganta, but it does not affect her. Instead, she hits the Batwing down, at the same time Dinah catches the Batwing, Superman quickly knocks Giganta out. Wonder Woman coming down out of know where about to deliver the killing blow, but superman stops her. With all that action, it is usually hard to follow, but the way the panels were laid out, the action pages felt smooth.

We finally get to know what these zombies are, and they are not zombies they are called Blights, which are an extension of the Anti-Life Equation. Their only goal is to kill all living things; what makes matters worse is that they can sense life. So, them staying at the daily planet is not a good idea at all. As I said, Tom Taylor is excellent at giving hope to us then instantly destroying that hope.

Now the question is, should you get this issue of DCeased? And the answer is HELL, YES! DCeased is honestly one of the best zombie stories ever told, better than World War Z, better than Zombie Land, better than Marvel Zombies, and defiantly better than The Walking Dead.
