Denis Villeneuve Talks About Creating The Sandworms For ‘DUNE’

Frank Herbert’s Dune has been the subject of many attempts to adapt it to the screen. Both small and large. While there have been some impressive attempts, there has not been a definitive version. Because of that, director Denis Villeneuve is doing his very best to make his adaptation become that definitive work. That includes making sure that one of the most iconic creatures in the book come to life as never before.

That would be the Sandworms, the original inhabitants of the desert planet of Arrakis. The Sandworms are so iconic that even on NBC’s Chuck series, Chuck and his pal Morgan Grimes dressed as the Sandworm every Halloween. It was expected. So with that kind of pressure about the creature, Villeneuve spent over a year perfecting the look.

He discussed this in a recent interview with Empire Magazine.

We talked about every little detail that would make such a beast possible, from the texture of the skin, to the way the mouth opens, to the system to eat its food in the sand. It was a year of work to design and to find the perfect shape that looked prehistoric enough.

His thoughts were that such details were important so that Dune fans are sure he is taking the project and it’s adaptation seriously. Not that anyone familiar with Villeneuve would think otherwise.
