Instead, it’s Netflix who is on the receiving end of the backlash and for good reason. Both directors Judd Apatow and Brad Bird have spoken out against the streaming service, who is testing a feature that will allow consumers to watch their titles at a faster or slower rate.

The streaming service confirmed that this new feature would allow downloaded films and shows to be viewed at a slower or faster pace on your smartphone. It is something that Netflix is testing out and has not gone into full effect just get. This has angered directors, such as Apatow, we angerly tweeted out:

“Don’t make me have to call every director and show creator on Earth to fight you on this. Save me the time. I will win but it will take a ton of time. Don’t fuck with our timing. We give you nice things. Leave them as they were intended to be seen.”

Bird also commented:

“Does everything have to be designed for the laziest and most tasteless?”

Ant-Man’s Peyton Reed also joined the upset sentiments:

“This is a terrible idea, and I and every director I know will fight against it.”

And considering he just worked with Netflix on El Camino, Aaron Paul stepped in:

“There is NO WAY Netflix will move forward with this. That would mean they are completely taking control of everyone else’s art and destroying it. Netflix is far better than that. Am I right Netflix?”

This feature is currently only available on a small subset of Android devices. You would be able to play content from 0.5x (which is the regular speed), all the way up to 1.5x. This kind of feature is used in podcasting, which allows listeners to consume the episodes at a faster speed. As far as Netflix’s response, a spokesperson stated:

“We’re always experimenting with new ways to help members use Netflix. This test makes it possible to vary the speed at which people watch shows on their mobiles. As with any test, it may not become a permanent feature on Netflix.”

What do you think about Netflix’s trial, as well as the response from various directors?
