Disney+ Orders Rick Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson’ Series

The gods and goddesses of Greek mythology will soon bless a screen near you.  Author Rick Riordan announced last week that a Disney+ series based on his beloved series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, had officially been ordered. Season 1 will be based on the first book, “The Lightning Thief”.

The first adventure follows the titular protagonist, Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old who, after discovering he’s the demigod son of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, immediately finds himself on the bad side of Zeus after the sky lord’s master lighting bolt is stolen. To clear his name, and prevent a war in the heavens, Percy and his friends must trek across the country to locate the missing bolt and uncover the true culprit behind its theft. Four sequels followed, and two successful spin-off series, The Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo, have been published.

Two critically panned films starring Logan Lerman as Percy  were released in 2010 and 2013 respectively. Riordan has been extremely vocal over the years about his discontent with the films and has  spearheaded the new adaption since May 2020. Riordan will serve as an executive producer on the new series and will co-write the pilot with Jon Steinberg.

Director James Bobin will oversee the pilot. Bobin also directed the streamer’s Mysterious Benedict Society series. 20th Television will produce the Disney Branded Television series.

20th TV’s president Karley Burke stated:

“Bringing Rick Riordan’s brilliant Percy Jackson books to Disney+ as a television series has been a mission for so many of us at this company as well as for Rick himself, and Jon, Dan, James and the excellent team they have assembled have proven to be the perfect collaborators. Thanks to our friends at Disney Branded Television led by Ayo, and Disney Streaming led by Michael [Paull], this will be an adaptation for the ages, with all the excitement, action and mythology fans of the books expect and love.”

Other producers include Riordan’s wife, Rebecca Riordan, Dan Shotz, Jim Rowe, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, and D.J. Goldberg.

Although a release date is still forthcoming, and casting is currently underway, the Half-Blood fandom has plenty of reasons to rejoice about the upcoming project.
