‘The Mysterious Benedict Society’ Season 1 Finale Review – The Final Showdown?

The end is here. Well, the end of this season. I mean, it’s beginning to feel like the end is near, but that’s a conversation for a different day and different show. Nonetheless, it’s time to say goodbye, and hopefully not for good. But after all the buildup, all the suspense, we’re finally getting down to the bottom of everything. This “Improvement” plan that Curtain has been planning, Martina figuring out that Kate betrayed her, how the kids plan on stopping Curtain, and whether or not Benedict is able to help put a stop to his brother and rescue the kids. It’s been an unexpectedly exuberant ride and one that I would take again.

Episode 8: Big Day Today

“So… are you ready to make history?”

I’m sure that I’m not the only one who is sad to see this fun and mysterious season end, but it had to come at some time, right? Well, luckily this one goes out on a high note. This finale wraps everything up nicely while also giving us a little treat, suggesting that there may be a season 2. The majority of your most burning questions are answered, Milligan finds out some very important information, Kate makes a sacrifice and learns about her past, Reynie learns that only one person finds him funny, Constance ends up in the helmet of the Whisperer, Sticky is about to make history, and Benedict and Curtain finally come face to face in a showdown. But is this the final showdown? This episode may not be a huge epic with tons of unexpected twists and reveals, but it has enough to keep it fun and interesting. This is a finale that feels more like building blocks for what is to come next. The kids finally feel like the family that Benedict wanted them to be and every character feels more complete. This episode has action, heartwarming moments, and more mystery.  I hope they are greenlit for another season as things could get real spicy and they could really build on this new dynamic the kids have as well as the friends they have made along the way. The acting has been great throughout the series but Tony Hale has been very impressive. As Dr. Curtain, his transformation into a true villain was a delight to witness. I felt invested in every character and the fact that the show was able to feature complex, thoughtful, and diabolical themes without having to go too dark is a feat in itself. As I’ve said before, this was a show that the entire family could enjoy and mine did. I had a great time with this first season. Its rewatchability is high.

Final Thoughts

Constance has been my favorite character since the beginning. She never folds under pressure and she’s willing to risk it all to achieve the mission. Now that we learn some new information about her, she is more interesting than before. I’m still curious about Jackson and Jillson, they just seem to be pure evil. Also, what could be on Dr. Garrison’s blueprints? Hopefully we’ll get to find out in a second season. Ultimately, with its range of characters and morality contemplation, this is a show that I think will grow to be more popular in the next few weeks. I know some people are no longer fans of week to week episode drops and would rather wait until they’ve all been released to then binge. If you’re one of those people, I hope you enjoy this show as much as I did.

The Mysterious Benedict Society episode 8, as well ass the others are now streaming on Disney+. Stay safe and enjoy.
