Disney is beginning its assault on the streaming service industry with its very own Disney + set to rival the likes of Netflix. It will be the home for all things Disney and will include some original shows based off some of its biggest properties including Marvel and Star Wars.
When does Disney + launch and how much will it cost?
Disney announced at their investor day event yesterday that Disney + will arrive in the U.S on November 12, 2019, and will cost $6.99 per month or $69.99 annually. Bob Iger stated that Disney + would be “substantially below where Netflix is. That is in part reflective of the fact that it will have substantially less volume.” Thats a pretty damn competitive price compared to Netflix’s standard package of $10.99 per month.

At launch, Disney + will have 9 exclusive shows With many more on the way including MCU and Star Wars Spin-offs. We’ll start with the MCU show’s the first of which is a Loki spin-off starring Tom Hiddleston. We also know the service will include an adaptation of Marvel’s “What if” series which presents our favorite Marvel villains and heroes in alternate realities. Thanks to Kevin Feige we know that one episode will focus around Peggy Carter taking the super soldier serum and becoming captain America rather than Steve Rogers. Our next MCU series is known as WandaVision and, as you can guess, will feature around the Scarlett Witch and her robotic lover with Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen reprising their roles. We also have a logo (see below) for a Falcon and Winter Soldier spin-off show starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan and, according to Variety will feature Malcolm Spellman as a lead writer known for his work on ‘Empire’.
Moving over to a galaxy far far away now we have some exciting Star Wars series news. First of which is a live action show starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor with Alan Tudyk also reprising his role from Rogue One as the voice of K-2SO. We learned back in October 2018 that writer/director/actor Jon Favreau will be working on a live-action Star Wars series titled The Mandalorian. The series is set in between The Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, and will apparently “follow the travels of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy.” The first series is set to be 8 episodes long.
The series stars Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) in the series main role as a gunslinger living on the edge of the galaxy. The series will also include Giancarlo Esposito ( Breaking Bad) as well as infamous Star Wars characters such as bounty hunter IG-88.
We will finally get one last season for The Clone Wars which will conclude the series. There’s even been recent speculation about a series based off Ewoks. Whilst this isn’t confirmed it makes a lot of sense to capitalize on Disney’s younger audience.
We’ve also had confirmations for a Monster’s Inc spin-off show titled “Monsters at work” as well as series for High School Musical, Lady and the Tramp and many more.
Disney’s already existing properties moving to Disney +
Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter we know the service will debut with “around 500 films from the Disney library,” as well as “around 7,000 episodes of Disney TV fare.”
This includes a “Signature Collection,” of 13 classic films such as Aladdin, The Lion King and, 101 Dalmatians. there will also be 18 Pixar films availbe at launch with newer releases such as Toy Story 4 and The Incredibles 2 arriving a little later.
MCU head Kevin Feige told us as well as the rest of the MCU being availbe that, Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame will also be exclusive to the platform. Lucasfilm’s head Kathleen Kennedy also announced that the entire Star Wars saga will make its way to Disney Plus.
Thanks to the Disney-Fox deal The Simpsons will also be calling Disney Plus their new home.
