While JJ Abrams is shopping his talents to the highest bidder in his quest to consolidate his work to one studio, he is still hard at work on the last chapter of the Skywalker saga. It is Disney’s and Lucasfilm’s hope that this film will put the Star Wars franchise back at the top for fans and movie audiences alike.

Those with close knowledge of the production are reporting that Star Wars: Episode IX will serve as a “course correction” after their recent efforts (Solo: A Star Wars Story) have failed to meet the fan’s expectations or the studios.’

Solo: A Star Wars Story ended up not quite meeting expectations, neither critically nor commercially. The movie ended up grossing $393 million worldwide, and just $213 million domestically. While most studios would find this to be a success, Disney has the bar set for their Star Wars films at a much higher level.

It is thought Abrams close relationship with Disney CEO Bob Iger will give him the tools he needs to reach the lofty goals Star Wars fans and Lucasfilm has for the franchise. Although it was not necessarily a given that Abrams would take on this current film when Colin Trevorrow left the project. In the end, he decided he couldn’t pass up the chance to take what he learned while making Star Wars: The Force Awakens:

I learned so much in that movie and I saw that this was a chance to sort of realize something that we hadn’t quite achieved – and part of that was it was simply the beginning of these new characters and their story,” Abrams explained. “The opportunity to sort of take what we had learned, to take the feeling of who these characters are and what they are and give them a final chapter that felt in the spirit of what we begun.
