Video Quality
Domestic Disturbance comes to Blu-Ray with a 1080p transfer that is passable and a step up in quality from the dated DVD, yet we cannot help but wish for better. While there are no specific details available about the transfer, this is pretty clearly derived from an older master that shows signs of age-related wear and tear. A fresh master would undoubtedly improve this one a bit more, but by and large, the transfer looks pretty clear and somewhat detailed with only fleeting downturns in quality.
Colors are one of the strongest aspects of the disc with deep, natural hues permeating the screen. Black levels leave you wanting a bit more depth and detail, but we did not experience egregious crush or other artifacts. Specks of print damage are present without being overbearing. The transfer retains its naturally filmic appearance with some welcome detail in the production design and clothing. If Paramount ever goes back to give this one the 4K UHD treatment, we would welcome it with open arms.
Audio Quality
Paramount Home Entertainment brings us this Blu-Ray with a lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix that accomplishes everything it needs to do admirably. Dialogue comes through quite nicely, radiating crisp and clear without being drowned out by the music or sound effects. The film features sporadic kinetic sequences when it shifts into thriller mode that uses the subwoofer to good effect. The environmental effects are defined evenly and given deliberate placement throughout the speakers. All of the sounds of the world mix with the score to bring exceptional life to the rear speakers. This is a track that represents this film perfectly well. There are optional English SDH subtitles provided.
Special Features
- Audio Commentary: Director Harold Becker provides a steady commentary track in which he discusses the motivations behind different moments, the pacing, working with John Travolta, and more that delivers a good baseline of information.
- Deleted Scenes: There are seven scenes of unused material provided totaling eight minutes with optional audio commentary from director Harold Becker. These are moments mostly cut for pacing, but they are worth checking out if you are curious.
- Theatrical Trailer: The two-minute trailer is provided here.
Final Thoughts
Domestic Disturbance is a very straightforward thriller that hits all of the conventional plot beats in an entertaining enough manner. The film moves along at a very brisk pace so that it never feels too dull, but the character development is not deep enough to get you invested beyond a surface level. Vince Vaughn is convincingly menacing while John Travolta seems a bit checked out. This is the definition of a disposable studio effort, but those who spend time with it will likely get something from it. Paramount Home Entertainment has released a Blu-Ray with a passable A/V presentation and a few good special features. Recommended
