Donnie Yen Speaks On Why Marvel Works and Star Wars Does Not In China

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]When it comes to Star Wars the fanbase reaches around the world and back again. Star Wars fans are some of the most passionate fans there is but not when it comes to the Chinese market. JoBlo got a chance to speak with actor Donnie Yen (Rogue One) and he had some interesting things to say about why Marvel works in China but Star Wars does not:

“Chinese audiences didn’t grow up with Star Wars culture so, unfortunately, it didn’t work. Marvel is a lot easier to understand. Star Wars, there’s a whole universe out there. Marvel, from the costumes, to the music, to the idols, to the stars, it’s much easier to close the gap between the film itself and the audience.”

The International market is more powerful than it ever has been and now days it can be the saving force behind some of your favorite films. People use to measure a films success on what it did domestically but not these days. Take for example a film like Pacific Rim – it grossed $101.8 million domestically, in China alone the film made $111.9 million. It was the international box office that got the film its sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising which tanked domestically but made $99.4 million in China alone. Star Wars Episode IX is now in production with director J.J. Abrams whose last Star Wars film The Force Awakens saw $124 million of its $2 billion gross come from China. Unfortunately for Rian Johnson the market in China hated his film apparently because it grossed only $42.5 million.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1433″ img_size=”802×529″ alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
