It’s a question of, will they, won’t they? Reports have gone back and forth whether or not the characters played by Ewan McGregor and Chris Messina are gay in the upcoming Birds of Prey film. According to Variety, Rosie Perez won’t be the only actor who is playing a gay character in the movie.
Co-stars McGregor and Messina were asked about the back and forth rumors about their characters’ sexualities at the recent Birds of Prey Harlywood exhibit in Hollywood. McGregor expressed:
“It’s very complicated. Their relationship is very much based…there’s a want and a need in there for sure.”
Messina added:
“There’s like a real love of anarchy.”
McGregor then interjected and stated,
“More than likely, yes.”
Other than that confirmation, McGregor also wanted to express his interest in people finally being able to see the movie:
“It was incredibly bonkers to shoot. Every take was like a new experience.”
Based on both of the actors’ comments it is pretty clear that there won’t be able definitive proof of a relationship between the two. While the DCEU has been better about LGBT characters than Marvel has been at representing them, it will surely leave some fans disappointed that Birds of Prey didn’t decide to fully take the plunge.
Then again, McGregor and Messina could have just been cheeky and perhaps, we will see proof of the two being a couple. What do you think about McGregor and Messina’s comments?
