In the dimly lit corners of the horror genre, where fear intertwines with fascination, there exists a realm where fans and creators converge—a world where the lines between reality and fiction blur, and the macabre dances with the mundane. At the helm of this venture is Joshua Viola, a mastermind weaving together a tapestry of terror unlike any other.
In this exclusive Q&A session, we delve into the depths of horror with Joshua Viola, co-creator of the spine-chilling series True Believers. With a star-studded cast of horror icons and a narrative that transcends the boundaries of convention, True Believers promises to take readers on a journey through the darkest recesses of the human psyche.

Q: Joshua, TRUE BELIEVERS boasts an impressive lineup of horror icons such as Jamie Lee Curtis, GWAR, R.L. Stine, and others. What inspired you to bring together such a diverse and esteemed cast of contributors for this project?
Joshua: The heart of True Believers lies in fandom. Being a fan myself, I wanted to explore how we engage with our favorite figures in the genre. Jamie was our first choice from the start, and she enthusiastically embraced our request with a simple “Sure!” It’s likely that Jamie’s familiarity with Stephen’s work, evident in her reference to his book My Heart is a Chainsaw in her graphic novel Mother Nature, played a role in her quick agreement. As for the others, we’re devoted fans of everyone we’re featuring, and they all embraced the concept warmly. R.L. Stine has been really supportive, while GWAR and Matt Heafy surprised us with generous exclusive rewards for fans. Matt even offered a 30-minute original score! Devon Sawa has been fantastic too, embracing our playful teasing with good humor. Interacting with these people, experiencing their kindness and generosity firsthand, has only deepened my admiration for them.
Q: The setting of TRUE BELIEVERS within the Colorado Festival of Horror and the world of cosplay offers a unique backdrop for the story. What motivated you and Stephen Graham Jones to choose this setting, and how does it enhance the narrative?
Joshua: Stephen and I are regulars at fan conventions, although typically in a working capacity. We have a close relationship with the organizers of COFOH, and I’m proud to be a sponsor. Each year, I strive to offer something unique for fans. Our first venture was an 80s horror movie prose anthology titled It Came from the Multiplex. True Believers was initially conceived as a small comic exclusive for the convention, but its concept struck a chord with horror fans, evolving into a larger project than we anticipated. Nevertheless, COFOH holds a special place in our hearts, and we’re excited about the idea of creating a meta experience for fans. Being able to attend the convention and acquire the comic set in the same venue adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience.
Q: The Kickstarter campaign for TRUE BELIEVERS #2 includes special variant covers featuring Jamie Lee Curtis and R.L. Stine, with proceeds going to charity. Could you elaborate on the decision to incorporate these exclusive editions and the charitable aspect tied to Jamie Lee Curtis’ variant cover?
Joshua: Jamie is deeply committed to her charity, My Hand In Yours, which supports the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. In March, my company, Hex Publishers, collaborated with her charity for Make March Matter, raising funds for the hospital. It was a rewarding experience, and it inspired me to explore further ways to utilize our collaboration with True Believers to continue aiding children in need. Originally, I considered doing cameo variants featuring our celebrity guests. Then I realized we could elevate Jamie’s variant beyond that, aiming to make a real difference for those in need. So, for each copy of Jamie’s True Believers variant cover (by Matthew Therrien) we sell, I will personally match that amount and donate the funds to the hospital in care of her charity.
Q: The series introduces the menacing slasher character, Killr. How does this character evolve in issue 2 with the emergence of a mysterious new figure adopting the Killr persona, and what can readers expect from this development?
Joshua: Killr’s appeal lies in the character’s universality. Killr can be anyone. We’re not recounting the tale of the actual Killr, but rather delving into how fans interpret this character, especially the more deranged ones who believe they have an exclusive understanding—the “true believers.” For example, rather than narrating the exploits of Michael Myers himself, we’re exploring fans’ perspectives on him. As readers witnessed in issue 1, the toxic fans can be more chilling than the villains they adore. In this second installment, I believe we’ve not only heightened that aspect but also tackled it in a refreshingly unique manner.
Q: TRUE BELIEVERS promises a blend of suspense, humor, and gore. How do you and Stephen Graham Jones balance these elements, and what tone or atmosphere can readers anticipate in the upcoming issues?
Joshua: It’s kind of second nature, to be honest. Stephen and I share similar tastes, particularly in horror. We both believe that humor is just as crucial as the body count. When we exchange drafts, we’re always seeking ways to heighten either the humor or the scares. Additionally, we adhere to the principles laid out by Jamie Kennedy’s character Randy in Scream 2: sequels should enhance what fans enjoyed about the original—more blood, more twists, more fun.
Q: What unique perspectives or experiences do you bring to the world of horror comics, and how do you think this influences your approach to storytelling in TRUE BELIEVERS?
Joshua: Stephen and I share a love for comics, spanning beyond just horror to encompass all genres. And we both value experimental storytelling. In the first issue, we introduced a unique narrative technique where the character enacts his favorite movie in his mind while attempting to replicate it in real-time, resulting in disastrous consequences. We designed the layout (with the help of our amazing artist Ben Matsuya) to showcase both perspectives simultaneously, requiring readers to rotate the comic to view the “movie” aspect. The comic book medium grants us the freedom to explore innovative storytelling methods. In the second issue, we continue this trend by incorporating the cameos in a more complex way and extending the narrative through music. Music plays a significant role in this installment, as it did to some extent in the first. We’ve even included an actual score, allowing readers to engage with the story through additional senses. For issue 3, we’re planning to push boundaries further with more experimental storytelling techniques, moving beyond a simple linear sequence.
Q: How did you collaborate with Stephen Graham Jones and artist Ben Matsuya to ensure the story’s vision translated effectively to the visual medium?
Joshua: The process flows smoothly. Stephen and I brainstorm ideas and exchange drafts until we’re satisfied. Issue 1 underwent around 14 drafts, a bit hectic, but it evolved from initially planned 8 pages to 26. This time, the process is clearer. Now, I collaborate with Stephen on the story while working with Ben on the art. As both a writer and artist, managing this isn’t too challenging.
Q: TRUE BELIEVERS explores themes of fandom and obsession within the horror genre. What aspects of these themes did you find most compelling to explore, and how do you believe readers will connect with these ideas?
Joshua: Toxic fandom is evident to anyone who’s a fan of anything, easily observable even without attending conventions. Social media serves as a prime platform for witnessing its negative effects repeatedly throughout the day. It’s a widespread issue that resonates with everyone on some level, whether it’s about movies or sports. This compelled us to delve into it, shedding light on why some individuals become so consumed by their obsession that it turns toxic. Those who do often engage in unhealthy behaviors tend to harm themselves and others, even if they fail to recognize it. Our story serves as commentary on this phenomenon, but the bad guys get what they deserve. However, we also explore the positive side of fandom, highlighting the joy of connecting with like-minded individuals who share your passion.
Q: With the success of TRUE BELIEVERS, do you have plans to expand this universe or work on similar projects in the future? Can you offer any hints about potential future endeavors in the realm of horror comics?
Joshua: We have a lot going on behind the scenes for True Believers, but I’m not at liberty to spill the beans just yet. Let’s just say there’s a lot happening that goes beyond just the comic book.
Q: Finally, what message or emotion do you hope readers will ultimately take away from TRUE BELIEVERS, and what excites you most about sharing this series with fans of horror and comic books alike?
Joshua: Ultimately, I hope readers reflect on the importance of balance and healthy engagement with the things we love. In a world that seems to grow scarier by the minute, I believe the escapism and fun offered by horror and comic books are more crucial than ever. True Believers provides not only an escape from reality but also a platform for meaningful discussion within a genre that thrives on exploration and innovation. The excitement lies in sharing this journey with fans who share our passion for horror and comics, knowing that we’re all in this together, exploring the depths of fear and imagination.
As we conclude this insightful Q&A session with Joshua Viola, it’s evident that True Believers is more than just a comic series—it’s a celebration of fandom, a commentary on toxic obsession, and an exploration of the enduring allure of horror. With an esteemed lineup of contributors, a unique setting within the Colorado Festival of Horror, and a commitment to charitable endeavors, True Believers stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and creativity within the horror genre.
Joshua’s passion for storytelling and his dedication to pushing the boundaries of horror comics shine through in every aspect of True Believers. From the dynamic characters to the innovative narrative techniques, readers are in for an unforgettable ride as they delve into the twisted world of Killr™ and the true believers.
