The Ellis Park Race Course was built in 1922. It was initially called Dade Park by its founder, Green River Jockey Club. The race track was originally named after the director and organizer of the Green River Jockey Club, A. B. Barrett Dade.
Even though the founder wanted to build a one-mile-long race track, the hired architect, Ernest F. Bohme, got confused during development for it to become one of the longest in the country. He only sketched a 3/8 mile race track, which the founder later approved.
The inaugural race was a Grand Circuit Harness meet. It was held last October 19, 1922. A month later, the race course hosted its first Thoroughbred meet. The purses for the entire meet were only $62,000.
The Green River Jockey Club experienced financial woes, resulting in their bankruptcy filing. James C. Ellis bought the race track and other facilities for $35,100 at an auction. 1954, the race track was eventually renamed Ellis Park to honor its long-time owner.
Since then, Ellis Park continues to host numerous horse races, both small- and big-scale races. This August 11, nine races will be run. To discover which races you should watch and bet on, this article highlights them below.
Maiden Claiming $50,000
The first face on August 11 is the Maiden Claiming $50,000. It will start at 11:45 a.m. with seven two-year-old horses. The purse on this race will be $32,000 plus $8,000 from the Kentucky TB Development Fund.
A Maiden Claiming race is for horses who have never won and can be claimed or bought for a designated dollar amount. The horses competing here usually aren’t relatively fast enough to compete at big-scale and higher-level races.
As such, these types of races are a great way to start horse racing betting journeys. Bettors have more opportunities to win since horses compete here and run an even playing field.
Claiming $40,000
Three-year-old and upward horses will compete in the second race at 12:14 p.m. Horses have been non-winners of A Race At A Mile or Over since July 11, with more than $40,000 in purses.
The purse of this race is $40,000. It will be competed on by five horses who are confirmed race participants. These are On a Spree, Tapage, Sugoi, Shortlist, and Monaafeth, all from Kentucky.
Maiden Special Weight
The Maiden Special Weight is for fillies who are two years old. These fillies must also be at least 119 Lbs and have been sold for $50,000 or less in their most recent auction. This third race is at 12:43 p.m. It’s seven furlongs long and is being competed by seven fillies.
This type of race is often called the training wheel race. It is allowed for horses who have never won a race and those who aren’t eligible to run in them after visiting the winner’s circle. Male horses can’t run in races restricted for fillies and mares, but female horses are allowed to run against the boys.
