Fans don’t care whether “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” wins any awards – they just want to see their heroes – or what’s left of them — just one last time.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”29778″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Director J.J. Abrams may feel differently, but in the end he wants to give fans one more ride with The Resistance and if it garners any awards – well that’s just gravy.

But this being a participation medal culture, the top betting sites already are handicapping movie awards season from the Oscars to the Razzies.

Which one will Episode 9 of “Star Wars” fall into? Maybe both, but we’re still pulling for Oscar.

All fans know about the film is what tidbits leak on the internet and the thorough dissection of released trailers and what people, such as the director, spills at fan gatherings. We’re not in the business of spoiling anything before the movie’s release on Dec. 20, but we’re still dropping in a warning for those wanting to remain on the dark side of knowing anything.

But the general gist has Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron continuing their journey as The Resistance again faces the First Order. With power and knowledge of generations behind them (uh, Leia & Luke?), the final battle commences.

At the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago in April, Abrams told the crowd that this final movie of “The Skywalker Saga” “doesn’t pick up immediately after the last film … “Some time has gone by.”

We will definitely see the new set of usual suspects: Finn (John Boyega), Jedi Rey (Daisy Ridley) and fighter pilot Poe (Oscar Isaac). And of course, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

Add the mix the old souls of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Lando (Billy Dee Williams), Chewbacca and Princess Leia/General Leia Organa (the late Carrie Fisher, appearing through footage filmed before her death almost three years ago).

The film will feature our beloved heroes in one spot, according to a New York Times article, as “an adventure that the group goes on together,” according to Abrams.

Then again, fans also will need a resolution from that trailer shot that had Rey wielding a RED lightsaber and the ending cackle of Palpatine.

Whether any of these performances rise to award status like Guiness or the movie itself overall for Best Picture, remains to be seen. It is a practically given the movie will be nominated for several creative awards from sound to special effects.

It is expected it also will be nominated its musical score, the last from Academy Award winner John Williams, who has been nominated 50 times for Oscar for his musical contributions to the film industry from “Valley of the Dolls” to “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Among his five Oscar wins was Best Original Score for “Star Wars: A New Hope.”

As for “Rise of Skywalker,” Williams told radio station KUSC, ““It will round out a series of nine and be quite enough for me.”

As for The Razzies, honoring the worst in movies, it comes to no surprise to fans that “Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace” was nominated. Let’s face it, from Jar Jar to the trade war, the movie wasn’t the best.

The film did not win the not-so-much-coveted award — “Wild Wild West” took home the “prize” in 1999. Director George Lucas also was nominated and did not win.

In 2002, “Attack of the Clones” and Lucas were again nominated for Razzies.

But the new hope is for an Oscar, but we have to admit there is little or no buzz for “Episode 9” for being in the race for major categories, but we’re willing to be wrong. Heck, we’re not even sure “Avengers: Endgame” will make the cut.

Other “Star Wars” movies DID make the cut – at total of 24 nominations – with 1977’s “Episode IV” getting the lion’s share of 10 nominations.

Nominations were Best Picture, Actor in a Supporting Role (Alex Guinness), Director (George Lucas), Original Score (John Williams), Art Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing, Sound and Visual Effects.

The movie won six Academy Awards for Art Direction, Costumes, Film Editing, Score and Visual Effects. Benjamin Burtt Jr. also was given a Special Achievement Award for his creation of the alien, creature and robot voices in the film.

Other Oscar nominations:

  • “Phantom Menace” — three nominations in sound and visual effects
  • “Attack of the Clones” – one for visual effects
  • “Revenge of the Sith” – one for makeup
  • “The Force Awakens” – Five nominations for film editing, Original Score, Sound Mixing and Editing and Visual Effects
  • “The Last Jedi” – Four nominations for Original Score, Sound Editing and Mixing and Visual Effects.

“The Rise Of Skywalker” hits theaters on Dec. 20. The Razzie nominations will be announced on Jan. 10. We’ll know who is nominated for the Academy Awards on Jan. 22.
