First Look Pictures of ‘Daredevil’ Season Three Features a Not So Happy Reunion with Foggy

As Samuel L. Jackson advised in Jurassic Park, hold on to your butts.

This upcoming season of Daredevil will be much darker than anything we have seen before. In an exclusive with EW, we’ve learned that Matt is not in a good place at all in the beginning on season three. This could coincide with the teaser trailer we’ve seen, where Matt is willingly letting the Devil reign free, whereas before he was a man of god. After the injuries he sustained at the end of The Defenders, Matt’s heightened senses are failing, and Elektra is gone. Being in a bad place, though; doesn’t seem to stop him from putting on the black suit he wore in season one.

“Matt starts the season broken physically, broken emotionally, and broken spiritually,” new showrunner Erik Oleson (Arrow) says. “He’s angry at God, he’s angry at the fact that he had risked his life to do God’s work, and he’s questioning whether or not he was a fool.”

“Matt goes to pretty much the darkest place you can. When he realizes that he’s incapable of being Daredevil, he would rather just end it than go forward in his life without abilities. He’s decided to set aside his Matt Murdock persona and just be the Devil, to isolate the lighter part of himself.” – Oleson went on to say.

I do want to take a moment to refer back to Matt and The Punisher’s last conversation in Daredevil season two. Seeing that his way was not helping, Matt offered to take Frank Castle’s approach “just this once”. To which, Frank informed him, once you cross that line, there’s no going back. So, Matt Murdock fulling throwing away his Murdock persona and submersing himself as a vigilante; we’ll have to see what happens. Season two of Luke Cage saw Luke realizing he couldn’t change Harlem by simply being the hero and Danny needed to pass along ownership of the fist in season two’s finale of Iron Fist. Are we seeing a trend of our heroes acknowledging that sometimes what they do is just not enough?

Matt will have to contend with not only Foggy and Karen learning he’s not only alive, but kept this fact from them, but also “Sister Maggie (Joanne Whalley) joins as “a tough, Hell’s Kitchen-born-and-bred nun,” FBI Agent Ray (Jay Ali) “carries the heart of the season,” and “a psychologically tortured FBI sharpshooter” played by Wilson Bethel “could teeter towards good or towards evil, depending on who is manipulating or inspiring him.”

The big guns, though; is Wilson Fisk. Vincent D’Onofrio will make his return to the show and as we know, he is not someone you want to go toe to toe with. Waiting for his chance to retake his throne while in prison, I can only imagine what the kingpin has in store.

“Fisk has gotten smarter, more calculated, and more manipulative. I very much wanted to tell a story that’s relevant to the world around us. I looked at the show as a way to examine how tyrants manipulate in order to push their own agenda and cause fear and distrust.” Oleson stated.

I have a feeling Daredevil season three is going to take our breath away and be one of the best seasons we’ve seen out of the Defenders universe. Daredevil returns to Netflix October 19th.
