General Grievous Comes to Battlefront 2: Is It Too Late?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”9448″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]So Battlefront 2 has finally received its long overdue content update in the form of new playable villain, General Grievous. The droid general is a mixed bag for but my real problem with him isn’t really his fault and more Battlefronts attitude to new content in general but I’ll talk more about that later, For now, lets break down the latest addition to Battlefront 2’s roster and see if it really is the games saving grace or yet another lackluster addition to an already problem-filled game.

The Pros

Let’s talk about what I love about General Grievous before we get all negative up in here. He looks and sounds absolutely incredible. In fact, I would argue that he looks better here than he does in Revenge of the Sith but to be fair that is a 13-year-old film. Mathew Wood reprises his role as the voice of the droid general and as a huge fan of the clone wars I have to say its pretty damn epic hearing his voice as you tear down enemy after enemy. That leads me onto another pro for Grievous; he’s seriously fun to play. The only hero who comes close to being as fun as Grievous is Maul and even he just doesn’t feel as epic. There’s something about swinging 4 lightsabers around at once that’s just insanely fun. The last thing I liked about Grievous didn’t actually have anything to do with his gameplay per say but more the technical side of the game. If you want to play with Grievous in multiplayer it will cost you 35,000 credits which I don’t think is too bad. If you’re still playing this game then you most likely have more than enough to buy him, it’s not like we’ve had anything worthwhile to buy up to now, and after playing with him 35,000 feels like just the right price. However, if you say, don’t play a lot of multiplayer and don’t have the credits, or you just want to go on a huge killing spree with the new hero without having to try and get him in a match of galactic assault you can hop straight into arcade. Without paying a single penny or credit you can equip his most powerful star-cards, bump the enemy count up to 999 and crush rebel scum to your heart’s content. It might not sound like a huge thing but being able to play this character completely for free and without even having to grind in-game is pretty cool especially for a game controlled by EA.

The Cons

Slapping a beautifully rendered lightsaber wielding maniac in front of me will keep me occupied for a short while but the general is far from perfect which was too be expected after Battlefront 2’s track record and yet still disappointing considering how long we’ve waited for this. The general’s animations are easily the most complex in the whole game but that isn’t an excuse for them to not work correctly. Animation glitches, especially when switching between his various abilities weren’t enough to ruin the experience but happened a little more than I would have liked. Speaking of those abilities I encountered a glitch where he takes frontal damage when activating his unrelenting advance ability when he simply shouldn’t. A small bug which will likely be ironed out soon but again a little more quality control would be appreciated. Also, side note 20,000 credits is way too much for a skin, especially a skin that only really messes his face up a little and adds some scorch marks. Give me a caped Grievous skin and then you’ll be talking.

I said earlier that my main problem wasn’t with Grievous himself and what I meant by that is I hate the way EA and Dice are handling the DLC seasons. I would genuinely rather wait an extra month or two and not get General Grievous now if it meant I could get a whole Clone Wars DLC complete with new maps, game modes, vehicles, the lot. I understand that all that is coming but when exactly. The whole system of a character here, and then a month later, a map here is really obnoxious. For all of its faults, EA’s first attempt at Battlefront had 4 major DLC’s that dropped on a certain day and we got a whole load of new content to play through right away. Here once you’ve played a few matches as Grievous that’s all its going to be until the next DLC drop in a months time. Plus, they even had the nerve to showcase Grievous on Geonosis and even have Obi-Wan in the background despite the fact we won’t be getting that content for a very long time. Talk about adding salt in the wound.

Battlefront 2 was the first game I ever reviewed and in that review, I said that the game could be a 7 or even an 8 out of 10 once good quality DLC starts rolling out. Now don’t get me wrong Grievous is a hell of a lot of fun to play, and I’m sure so will Kenobi and eventually all the other Clone Wars content when we get it, but this waiting around and getting fed small treats here and there isn’t good enough to keep most fans invested, especially after you’ve screwed them over so much in the past. If you’re really interested in giving him a try then sure jump on, you’ll have a blast but if I were you I’d wait until February when we finally have all the content they’ve promised and then Battlefront 2 might feel like a refreshing and more polished experience.
