GVN Review: Paramount+ ‘Star Trek Prodigy’ Episode 10, ‘A Moral Star, Part 2’

In Part 1

When we last left the young crew of the Protostar, they had given up their ship to the Diviner and Drednok. They also had unexpectedly lost Gwyn for good measure. However, they apparently were well prepared for the Diviner and with Gwyn’s help, had spirited away the ship’s Proto-Drive. Hiding it inside the indestructible Murf. But they knew that Gwyn would not be able to delay her father for long. They would need to gather the unwanted (the miners of Tars Lamora) and load them upon their recently acquired Rev-12. IF they could figure out how to repair the ship’s power core and re-establish gravity. No problem.

Separate Missions

Dal and Zero were tasked with wrangling up the miners while Rok, Jankom and Murf were on engine repair. This task was complicated when the Diviner, realizing the Proto-Drive was back on Tars Lamora, reactivated his robot watchers. Fortunately, Rok and crew realized the problem and was able to shut the hatch to the engine room. Temporarily. At first, Jankom directed Rok to hold the Door while he worked on the engine. But he soon realized that Rok, with her time enhanced engineering skills would be better served working on the problem. HE would hold the door while she worked. Score one for talent recognition.

Finding a Way to Communicate

In the meantime, Dal was also having a run in with the Watchers. Not to mention a difficulty in getting the miners to understand what they needed to do. While they had come up with as short-term communication fix, it wasn’t powerful enough to talk to everyone. They needed a way to speed the evacuation up and expand their ways of communication. That is when Dal noticed the miner’s ankle bracelets. Perhaps THEY could be adapted. If he only could have enough time. But it appeared time was something that was running out. The Protostar had returned.

The Watchers Return

Speaking of time, Rok was almost finished with her repairs, but the watchers had entered the room. Jankom did the best he could to hold them off until Rok was able to throw the lever that restarted the power. It fired up flawlessly, reactivating the asteroids shields and the gravity along with it. Rok had succeeded. Proving she could do a lot more than muscle work…and Jankom could do more than what Rok referred to a “percussive maintenance.” But before they could celebrate too much, Drednok beamed into the room, demanding the Proto-Core. Rok pushed Murf away as she and Jankom jumped into battle with Drednok. Unfortunately, they were no match for the killer android.

Drednok loses his head

However, it seems they were not alone. The door forced open, and the miners filed in. Ready to take some vengeance against their tormentor. In the lead was Gywn’s little kitten friend. They not only could communicate with each other; they could share their intentions with Drednok…and they weren’t good ones. As was evidenced when the Diviner was separated from his head. As the miner’s celebrated their victory, Dal and Zero walked in. It seemed that Dal’s task of adapting the ankle bracelets into universal translators was a success. But it didn’t go without a hitch.

Apparently, Drednok was able to send the Proto-Drive’s coordinates to the Diviner before he was beheaded. Murf was still there, but the drive had been transported out of him. The Diviner now had the means to jump away. If he did, they would never see the Protostar again…or Gwyn. So, with the Rev-12 now repaired, Dal had the miners load themselves into the individual pods. They would take the ship in pursuit of the Protostar.

The Truth about the Vau N’Akat

Back on the Protostar, Gwyn was hard at work preventing her father from over-riding the ship’s systems. She also reprogrammed Holo-Janeway back into her Starfleet Version, but with certain upgrades. Janeway could now make herself more solid. Enough where she could physically block the Diviner, eventually pulling on one of his life support lines and allowing the precious liquid to spill to the floor. As he sank to the floor, he implored his “progeny” to help him. Without her help, their people could not be saved.

This was news to Gwyn. She had always been told that her father and her were the last of their kind. The last of the Vau N’Akat. But now, she is being told otherwise. Janeway asked Gwyn what she was waiting on. She needed to drop the Protostar’s shields. Considering her father, Gwyn told the computer to freeze Janeway’s holo. She wanted to hear more. He told her that their planet Solum was here. But it would not be for long. He had traveled back in time to save their people. Before the Federation caused their destruction. Gwyn wanted to know more. She wanted the truth…all of it. But her father said he could do better than that. He could show her their home world. Show her Solum.

Lowering the Shields

Meanwhile, Dal and the Rev-12 approached the Protostar. They were waiting for Gwyn to lower their shields, but something was obviously wrong. They could not beam aboard as long as the shields were up. Jankom suggested that they fire upon the Protostar. Dal was reluctant to fire on his own ship, but Zero told him that if they targeted the ship’s shield emitters, they could lower them enough to beam over. While not something Dal was enthusiastic about, he agreed and ordered the Rev-12 to fire upon the Protostar.

The Diviner’s Mission

On the Holo-deck, the Diviner showed Gwyn what Solum looked like at the present time. It was beautiful. Her father told her the Vau N’Akat were strong and confident in their own superiority. Thinking they were alone in the universe. Until the Federation appeared. After first contact, the Vau N’Akat started fighting against each other. A civil war over Federation membership. In a mere 50 years, the planet had become a wasteland. The Diviner had come back to prevent this from happening. He would use a program that was installed on the Protostar to corrupt Starfleet systems. In time, Starfleet would tear itself apart from within and he would prevent first contact from happening.

Dal to the Rescue

With the Rev-12 still firing, they could only transport one person at a time upon the Protostar. More importantly, the Proto Drive was active so the ship could leave at any time. Dal rushed to the transporter pad as Rok asked him what his plan was. He had no idea; he would try to let them know once he had one. Back on the Holo-Deck, Gwyn realizes that the crew’s plan to return to Starfleet was an impossibility. If they did, her father’s program would activate, and they would destroy Starfleet. It was wrong to trade one disaster for another. They could never go back. But the Diviner had other plans. As he started to exit the Holo-Deck, Dal appeared with twin phasers. Unfortunately, the Diviner reacted more quickly and used his heirloom to restrain Dal. Gwyn also tried to intervene but also was quickly dispatched by her father. They alone could not hope to stop him. But they were not alone.

This Way Lies Madness

Zero appeared. She reminded the Diviner that he had once used Zero’s abilities as a weapon. Now, he would see Zero in its true form, so he could not hurt anyone else. Zero’s outer shell was discarded, and the Diviner was unable to look away. As he was captured by Zero’s influence, Gwyn struggled to her feet, but Dal focused her attention on him. He warned her not to look at Zero or as all beings who gaze at the Medusans, she would go mad. As she focused on Dal, her eyes wandered down to his communication badge, and caught a glimpse of Zero’s reflection. Dal told Zero to shut it down, but it might have been too late, as she collapsed to the ground.

Back to Starfleet

In the end, the miners were left with the Rev-12. The ship that once was their captor had become their liberation. Did they know how to fly it? No, but neither did the Protostar crew at first. As for the Diviner, he was left on Tar Lamora as the single unwanted. Lost in his own madness and the ruins that he himself created. As for Gwyn, Zero did everything possible for her. Fortunately, the only thing Gwyn lost was her memories of what had transpired. Her new family would look after her. Meanwhile, Captain Dal ordered the ship toward the Federation. It was time to return the Protostar back to Starfleet. They had all grown so much on their adventures and this was only the beginning.

Thoughts

A well-produced two-part series final with a nice mix of action and suspense while allowing each character moments to shine. Especially like Rok-Tahk coming through with her big brain. She is so much more than just a big, red forklift. Although, she might want to work on her combat skills. Drednok kind of kicked her butt. But I still love you, Kid.

A couple of curiosities though. When did the Diviner fix his fluid tube? It went from broken to intact when he took Gwyn to the holo-deck. Also, no mention if whatever the Diviner had planned for whichever Starfleet ship they ran into was disabled. If not, a whole bunch of trouble is waiting for Admiral Janeway and the Starfleet ship that encounters them. Of course, Gwyn no longer remembers that there is a secret weapon aboard the Protostar. But I guess that’s a story for Season 2. That along with what exactly happened with Chakota.

In Conclusion

This was a wonderful conclusion for a very promising series. It did a marvelous job of introducing a new audience to the Star Trek family. Fresh, new characters as well as call backs to the rich history of the Star Trek Canon made this an enjoyable 1st season for both newcomers and old salts like me. Plus, they left some intrigue for the next season. I give the two-part final a strong 4.5 out of 5 and a rock solid 4 out of 5 for the season as a whole. The creative team built a strong foundation for future adventure. Star Trek Prodigy can be seen on Paramount+. Check it out while waiting for Star Trek Picard Season 2 to start.
