GVN Review: ‘Star Trek Prodigy’ Episode 4, ‘Dreamcatcher’

Last Time

Last time on Star Trek Prodigy, our intrepid Star Ship “Cadets” learned a lesson about team work and trust. Well, at least Dal learned a bit about trust and knowing when to ask for help. But now that they have learned to rely on Holo-Janeway, they can set their next destination. Unfortunately, the Diviner is hot on their tail, looking for his daughter Gwyn and “his” missing ship. A fact not lost on “Captain” Dal. Which is why he is reluctant when Janeway points out a class M planet for them to investigate. However,  she intimates that if he refuses, she would contact Starfleet about his failure to follow a core tenant of Starfleet. “Seeking out Strange, New Worlds.” No reason to get the “adults” involved Dal assures Janeway. They will investigate the planet.

First Planet Exploration

Which gives Zero an opportunity to practice landing the Protostar. Not exactly text book but the ship does make it to the surface. Now Janeway familiarizes Dal and his crew with using phasers and perhaps, not shooting themselves in the process. They also are introduced to the Protostar’s land vehicle: The Runaway. Basically a large space-age Dune Buggy. Awesome Dude! At least Dal thought so as he took the Runaway on a joy ride, leaving the others to explore and gather samples. Nice job fearless leader. Meanwhile, they had left Murf alone on the ship along with their “helpless” prisoner Gwynn. Who was not anywhere near helpless, as she easily escaped her cell.

Desire to Stay

Not that Captain Dal knew anything about it. As he had removed his communication device and was sky watching as Janeway tried to let him know that Gwynn had escaped. Not only had she escaped, but apparently, her Father had taught her all about the operation of the Protostar, without her even knowing why. Until now. He had been preparing her for this moment. She now had complete control of the Protostar, and Holo-Janeway. And her first order of business was to contact her Father. Elsewhere planet-side, each of the crew are encountering manifestations of things that they desire. But it does not come without a cost. Will they find a way to escape and before Gwynn can take the ship back to her Father? The Answers await.

Thoughts

The Team’s first Away Mission was far from routine. Although, part of the issue was the team’s inexperience and their failure to stay together. Just as before, Dal showed a blatant need to think only about himself at first. Leaving the others to joyride in the Runaway. However, when push came to shove, and he realized the danger they were in, he became more focused. Searching for each member of his crew on the return to the Protostar. Too bad that Gwynn had already attempted  to take the Protostar back to “Daddy.” They really need to stop underestimating that young lady. But now, they have bigger issues to resolve.

One of the things this episode did accomplish was to reveal a little more about each person. The planet’s ability to manifest each person’s desires, their dreams if you will, gave the viewer a glimpse into what are still new characters. Poor Roc-Tahk just wants someone or something to love and love her back. Jankom Pog obviously is totally centered on what he can eat. After years of Prison gruel, you could imagine why (but don’t tell Roc-Tahk that). Zero is uber inquisitive and wants to learn about EVERYTHING. Which made Zero probably the easiest member of the crew to get to stay. Dal needed to know about his past. Who he is and what his origins are. Although, his trust issues are probably why he was able to so easily dismiss what he was seeing. And finally, Gwynn wanted her Father to care about her and not think of her as a means to an end. Amazing what you can learn in under 30 minutes.

Dreamcatcher was a solid episode if not an immersive one. The short time allotted didn’t really allow for a deep dive into the characters, but it accomplished quite a bit in short time. I give it a solid 4 out of 5, especially for how they ended the episode. Star Trek: Prodigy can be found on Paramount+ with new episodes released on Thursday.
