Immediately after the Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the 2026 NBA playoffs, the basketball world at large came together to ask a single question: What’s next for LeBron James? Retirement? A return to the Lakers? A reunion with the Cleveland Cavaliers? Might he link up with Stephen Curry and join the Golden State Warriors? Is another team, like the San Antonio Spurs or New York Knicks, on the table?
This question was posed to the four-time MVP himself following the Lakers’ playoff exit. If anyone was hoping for some clarity, they were sorely disappointed.
“I don’t know what the future holds for me,” he told the assembled media.
This is a predictable response. It’s also an understandable one. His season has just ended. He isn’t going to have all the answers that soon.
At age 41, with 23 years of NBA basketball under his belt, virtually every possible outcome is seemingly on the table. Granted, other scenarios seem more likely than most.
A quick perusal of the best betting sites for the NBA cobbled together by the experts over at MyTopSportsBooks shows that linemakers believe a reunion with the Cavaliers is the most likely outcome for LeBron this summer. Meanwhile, a return to the Lakers or retirement are neck and neck for second place. Every other possibility, joining the Warriors, Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers, etc., is considered a distant third.
Naturally, this got us thinking: Is this an accurate snapshot of what LeBron might do? The only way to do that, to make sense of it all, is to rank the top-five options based on what we believe and no, from worst to first.
5. LeBron James retires from the NBA
If we were going longer than five options, we would have this even further down the ladder. While LeBron is no doubt going to at least contemplate walking away, he just proved that he was still good enough to be the best star in a playoff series. Leaving the game now would feel abrupt, even by the standards of without-warning decisions.
Plus, despite telling people close to him that he doesn’t want a retirement tour, it’s tough to believe he’d abscond from the NBA without one. Even Michael Jordan embarked on a retirement. He arguably had two of them, if you count his second return out of retirement with the Washington Wizards.
4. LeBron joins the Knicks
LeBron has flirted with the idea of joining the Knicks before. Though they cannot offer him more than a league minimum contract (as of now), there’s a chance he does so again.
Having the opportunity to end New York’s five-decades-long championship drought has ranked among the primary Big Apple draws for LeBron in the past. It might speak to him again.
Of course, this presumes the Knicks do not win the 2026 NBA Finals. And that much remains to be seen.
Still, with the Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder looming as odds-on favorites, it’s not ridiculous to assume they won’t. And in the event they don’t, the Knicks would appeal to LeBron even more. Not only would the opportunity to help them win their first title in forever persist, but he’d be joining a team that just made the Eastern Conference Finals and potentially NBA finals.
3. LeBron reunites with the Cavaliers

Putting the Cavs this low when so many consider a return to Cleveland the most likely scenario is a risk. But it’s a calculated one.
First and foremost, the Cavaliers don’t have the money to offer LeBron more than a minimum contract. Returning to Cleveland would, as of now, require him to take a $50-plus million paycut from his most recent salary.
For LeBron to even consider that, the Cavs must profile as contenders. Nostalgia alone won’t be enough to land him. It remains to be seen whether they’ll be in the championship mix. Making the Eastern Conference Finals this year is a good harbinger, but many believe the roster will be headed for seismic change (and cost reduction) if they fail to appear in the NBA Finals.
What’s more, the prevailing belief is LeBron rejoining the Cavs would be a storybook ending situation—something he does only when he’s sure that he’s entering his last season. If you believe he will play beyond 2026-27, Cleveland’s odds of landing him dip considerably.
2. LeBron Re-Signs with the Lakers
Rumors of a disconnect between LeBron and the Lakers have swirled since last summer, when they didn’t offer him a new contract. Although some of the speculation has quieted, L.A. is under new ownership and firmly catering to the Luka Doncic timeline. The team may decide it’s time to part ways with LeBron, particularly if he’s not willing to take a massive pay cut.
On the flip side, while the Lakers have a ton of cap space, they are not guaranteed to reel in a big fish alongside Luka and free agent Austin Reaves. For his part, LeBron showed earlier this season is comfortable and effective when playing the role of a third option. If they can’t sign a big name in free agency or acquire one via trade, offering LeBron a market-value contract is a worthwhile contingency.
Perhaps LeBron balks at being considered Plan B. Or maybe the Lakers trade for a star and he’s willing to re-sign with them at a discount. LeBron has set up camp in Los Angeles, after all. He may not want to uproot himself again.
1. LeBron Teams up with Steph on the Warriors
LeBron and Steph seem like they’ve wanted to play with one another (outside of the Olympics) for a while. Now may be their best opportunity to do it.
There is a real chance that LeBron sits on the outside looking in at the Lakers’ plans. If they don’t want to pay him, there are only two other teams with cap space who could give him more than the $15 million mid-level exception: The Chicago Bulls and Brooklyn Nets. Neither of those squads is a viable destination. So if LeBron is leaving L.A., he’ll be left to consider $50-plus-million discounts or keep his eyes peeled for a could-be contender who can at least offer him that $15 million number.
The Warriors’ cap sheet currently allows them to get there, even if it takes some maneuvering. That shouldn’t be enough to poach LeBron in a vacuum, particularly when he wouldn’t make Golden State the title favorite—or anything close to it. But if it means finally linking up with Stephen Curry, not to mention Draymond Green, then this opportunity offers the right mix of competitive relevance and financial outlay.
