HBO Exec Talks Game of Thrones Prequels And Says No To A Sequel

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”22483″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Sunday marked the final episode of Game of Thrones and let’s just say this season was the most divisive of them all. Even I am not satisfied with then ending. Still, HBO gave us one of the most epic shows ever to grace television despite how you or I might feel about the ending. We do however have potentially three prequel shows coming, two of which are in script and one that begins filming in June which will be led by Naomi Watts.

A petition has been created asking HBO to rewrite and reshoot season eight but we know that’s just not going to happen. The Hollywood Reporter spoke with HBO executive Casey Bloys who had lots to say about moving forward with additional seasons sans Benioff and Weiss.

No. I don’t think any of the actors would have done it. Shows have to come to an end. This was eight seasons, it’s a great epic and shows have to come to a close. It’s part of the TV life cycle.

Benioff and Weiss are now working on Star Wars for Disney so they wouldn’t have been able to come back for another season of Game of Thrones and if Bloys is correct the cast was not going to do the show without them. What about a sequel so we can see more of Arya? Well don’t get your hopes up about that. Bloys had this to say

Nope, nope, nope. No. Part of it is, I do want this show — this Game of Thrones, Dan and David’s show — to be its own thing. I don’t want to take characters from this world that they did beautifully and put them off into another world with someone else creating it. I want to let it be the artistic piece they’ve got. That’s one of the reasons why I’m not trying to do the same show over. George has a massive, massive world; there are so many ways in. That’s why we’re trying to do things that feel distinct — and to not try and redo the same show. That’s probably one of the reasons why, right now, a sequel or picking up any of the other characters doesn’t make sense for us.

I for one would love a spin off of Arya but maybe down the line they will change their minds or maybe D&D will come back to Game of Thrones for a movie or another season to recap what’s been going on with some of our favorite characters.

Bloys was asked about making season 7 and 8 longer which he did say he would have loved to gone five more seasons but that Benioff and Weiss had an ending in mind and they did it in the amount of episodes needed. HBO was willing to give them full season orders for both season 7 and 8 but Benioff and Weiss declined.

When will the prequels be coming you ask? Well Bloys says he doesn’t want to speculate a time frame and he wants to get this new series right and have the best show possible.

Will you be tuning in for the prequel series or was season 8 of Game of Thrones enough for you? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
