HBO Max’s Adaptation of Rashomon Will Be Penned By The Comey Rule’s Billy Ray

HBO Max is developing a TV drama that is inspired by the 1950’s Akira Kurosawa classic, Rashomon. Billy Ray, who is behind the upcoming Showtime miniseries The Comey Rule [and has been behind Captain Phillips], is writing the upcoming HBO Max show. Along with Virgil Williams. Amblin Television will produce the series.

Rashomon has been in the works for around two years. Rather than be an adaptation of the 1950’s classic, the project will retain the key plot device of the film. Which is a drama that centers around a “grisly sexual assault and murder”. This show will be seen through the eyes of multiple characters throughout the season. Rashomon will explore these themes, just in a modern setting. Every episode will present the perceived truth of that character.

Hisao Kurosawa, the son of Akira, stated:

“I am delighted to work with Amblin Partners and HBO Max to reimagine Rashomon for today’s audience. I am excited to see my dad’s vision through this inspirational story kept alive and made accessible to a new generation.”

Williams and Ray also put out a statement:

“Our partnership on Rashomon is based on our mutual pledge to make every single episode, every scene, and every character of this show a loving homage to Kurosawa’s talent as an artist. That’s our true north.”

What do you think about Rashomon being adapted into an HBO Max series?
