When watching sports anime I always wondered, why do I get emotional? Is it because anime is one of the best media out there or is it because I understand the harsh reality of trying to be the best when it comes to sports? For me, it is both growing up I have done multiple sports like Track and Field, Soccer, Football, and most of all Basketball but also growing up I loved watching anime I remember waking up in the morning watching cartoon network and staying up all night watching Toonami. I was lucky enough to live in both worlds as an anime fiend and as an athlete.

Hinomaru Sumo has brought me back to those roots, me just enjoying a great anime without a care in the world also motivating myself to do better, not just in sports but in life. With each episode, I was mesmerized by each of the characters. Hinomaru confident but loveable attitude, Ozeki’s ability to love a sport like no other, Yuma’s Loyalty and determination and many other characters. In terms of character arc, I enjoyed Hinomaru Sumo even more than I did with Koruko no Basketball which is one of my favorite sport animes right now.

With all the great character development it does create problems at least for me. Hinomaru Sumo does a great job developing all of its characters, that does include the side characters, it lacks a certain strength with the overall story arc. At times the story seems a bit rushed but at the same time the end goal of the story was wrapped up in a gorgeous way, so I cannot argue that it was a weak story overall, but that it does lack a certain finesse.

The animation style for Hinomaru for me is something that stands out for this anime. Is it the best animation style out there no, but because of the art style it shows the strengths and weaknesses of each character and to me, that is what great animation should do. Hinomaru vs Kuze Sosuke final fight was fantastic visually and emotionally.

Hinomaru Sumo does a great job developing all of their characters from the main protagonist to all of the side characters, beautiful animations and fight choreography, Hinomaru Sumo story is simple but it is effective. If you are an anime fan or trying to get into anime I highly suggest you watch Hinomaru Somu. Crunchyroll
