‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Be Careful Who You Put Your Trust In

Two individuals with long dark and light hair, respectively, sit together in a dimly lit stone room. The light-haired person looks attentively at the dark-haired person who is speaking.

If there is one thing to be said in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, it’s that you should be careful of who you trust. You think you can trust family above all, but the Targaryens show that that is definitely not true. Not only is the entire war in House of the Dragon about two siblings fighting for succession, but even Aegon’s trust in Aemond was misplaced.

    Who to Trust?

Or how about Alicent’s trust in her council? Much of the reason why a war is being fought in the first place is because Viserys’ named heir, Rhaenyra; is a woman. The idea that Alicent would trust the men around her to make her Queen Regent while Aegon lays bedridden is oddly satisfying to watch fall apart. And it was amazingly acted – the scene focused on Olivia Cooke, who showed all of the hurt, anger, and betrayal that a person should feel in that moment.

Let’s back up a moment. Last week was powerful. Rhaenys and Meleys died. Now, we have the fallout. Rhaenyra trusted Daemon to conquer in her name, but it seems Daemon is up to his old BS in wanting the crown for himself. Aemond gleefully takes his place on the Iron Throne. Corlys trusted his house and family in Rhaenyra’s hands and now, he’s just lost his beloved wife. Let’s not forget that Alicent put her trust in Criston Cole, who finally saw that they are playing a war with dragons.

The first half of this episode is eerie, poignant, and stunning. We have raw moments like the townspeople realizing that a dragon is not immortal upon seeing Meleys’ head dragged through town, Aegon’s broken body being lowered into bed – amazing, harrowing shots. And we have Jacearys showcasing how he has grown up and is ready to rule – his scene at the Twins was great.

    Baela Targaryen is THAT Girl

The second half of the episode slows down a bit. But, there’s still good stuff to be had. Baela continues to show how badass she is. Her speech to Corlys was powerful and when she told him that she is blood and fire, I almost got chills. Corlys is understandingly feeling a little burnt out – considering his bond to Rhaenyra has cost him greatly. He will have to make an important decision and not to lean into any puns, but it’s a decision that will certainly turn the tides in this war.

The end of this episode is exciting though. Jacearys proves himself the best partner to Rhaenyra in the war and the hunt for Dragonriders is on. We only have a few more episodes after this and we believe they will be the craziest yet.
