‘I Know This Much is True’ Episode 3 Review: A Further Look Into Thomas’s Decline

HBO’s I Know This Much is True started with Mark Ruffalo, as Thomas Birdsey; cutting his hand off in a public library. For most of the first two episodes, the story focused on how this event and others have impacted Thomas’s brother Dominick, also played by Ruffalo. While episode three is still narrated by Dominick and shows how he met his ex-wife Dessa, it certainly shows more examples of how Thomas has declined throughout the years.

Ruffalo Keeps Delivering

Ruffalo continues to give a powerhouse performance in this HBO series. It’s still unbelievable that Ruffalo plays both Dominick and Thomas. They’re so vastly different and despite them being played by the same actor, they might as well be played by different actors. I would say that says a lot about Ruffalo as an actor and if there was any doubt of his abilities to command the screen, then I’d suggest giving this series a try.

Rosie O’Donnell also is giving a great performance; her scenes with Ruffalo work really well. I just am continuously captivated by the way Ruffalo portrays these twins. We also get a lot of insight of a time when Thomas’s health wasn’t in the shape it currently is in. We can feel Dominick’s frustration and Thomas’s fear as his mental state worsens. It’s very palpable and saddening.

Rating: 4/5

On top of this, we learn about tensions between the twins and a former classmate. Plus, Dominick gets some surprising news from his girlfriend Joy and we get an even bigger surprise at the end of the episode. I’m interested in seeing where this story is truly going, as it’s not clear just yet.
