In Viaggio translates to traveling in Italian. So, it’s a fitting title for filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi’s documentary on Pope Francis’s travels. In the ten years that Pope Francis has been the head of the Catholic Church, he’s traveled 53 countries and has spoken out on serious topics to the crowds who gather around him. It’s astonishing to even think of all the places he’s been in such a short time and this documentary is just a taste of his journey.
What Kind of Documentary is It?
In Viaggio feels less like a traditional audience-friendly documentary that you’re used to watching and more so like an archive of footage. There is no voiceover that guides the viewer throughout the film. We’re instead treated to footage of Pope Francis in various countries, the topics he’s speaking of, and some footage relating to the issues the pontiff is touching upon.
Of course, this is not a travel documentary in the sense of what you’re used to. The topics that Pope Francis touches upon are serious, and oftentimes he is visiting areas in countries that you won’t see on a travel itinerary. Pope Francis speaks out on poverty, migration, war, and the problem of sex crimes being covered up by the Catholic Church. In each speech, we see Pope Francis concerned and affected by everything he’s talking about. It’s sobering to say the least.
Despite many compelling moments, it may have benefitted In Viaggio to take on more of a storytelling approach. It is understandable that Rosi probably wanted the work to just speak for itself, and, as a Catholic, I did enjoy seeing Pope Francis visit so many countries and touching upon such serious topics. The archival footage should prove to be interesting to anyone regardless of their religious affiliation. However, it can be a bit of a slow watch, and in all honesty, is probably better digested in parts. Without the aid of a storyteller, the documentary can feel longer than it is. Nevertheless, if you’re interested in travel and the work of Pope Francis, it is an engaging and educational watch.
In Viaggio: The Travels Of Pope Francis will debut in select theaters and on VOD on March 31st courtesy of Magnolia Pictures.
