Indie Movie To Watch When You Can’t Go Outside: 2014’s Little Accidents

Synopsis: A fatal mining accident sets off a chain reaction of misfortune involving the lone survivor (Boyd Holbrook), a mining executive’s lonely wife, and a teenager with blood on his hands.

While self-isolating, you may find yourself at a loss and asking yourself “what do I watch?”. Sure, there’s plenty of televisions shows on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and even cable, whoever still has that, but sometimes we want a good movie to snuggle up to and watch. If you’re like me, maybe you fancy independent movies. After all, it doesn’t always take a huge Hollywood budget to tell a good story. That is why I want to suggest 2014’s Little Accidents. Not only is it a good indie film, but it also shows that Boyd Holbrook should get more acting roles. Holbrook stars in the film, along with Elizabeth Banks, Josh Lucas, and Chloë Sevigny.

The Plot

Little Accidents takes place in a rural town in America. The film starts off with the viewers feeling the effects that a terrible coal mine accident has on the town. All of the workers in one mine died, all except Holbrook’s character. Though slightly disfigured, Holbrook is seemingly a shadow of the man he used to. On top of having an extreme survivor’s guilt, he also is torn between two factions. Those who want him to stick with the mining coming and say nothing and those who want him to admit to negligence from management; which many cite as the reason for the accident.

On the other hands you have Elizabeth Banks, who is the wife of Josh Lucas’ character. Lucas and Banks have been getting a lot of hate, because Lucas is a mining executive that many blame for the negligence, which resulted in the mining accident. Lucas and Banks live well in a town where most people are doing poorly. The couple experiences their own tragedy when their son goes missing, which prompts Holbrook to help search for the son. Despite many telling him not to, as they feel he should harbor resenting for Lucas.

Rating: 4/5

As the audience, we already know what happens, but it’s the characters who are unaware of the truth behind the boy’s disappearance. The main focus of the film is Holbrook’s journey of physical therapy, trying to regain normalcy, caring for his friend’s widow, and beginning an affair with Banks. Little Accidents is a goggled view of rural America as well as how simple, “little accidents” can have massive consequences. I was simply impressed with Holbrook’s depiction of a broken-down man who tries his best not to be a burden nor display how much he’s suffering internally, even though you can see it yourself.

I won’t give too much away, but if you are looking for an indie movie that probably flew under your radar, Little Accidents is a good one.
