Video Quality
Inside debuts on Blu-Ray with a 1080p presentation in its original 2.39:1 aspect ratio that brings this sleek and claustrophobic movie to life. The transfer provides a stellar amount of detail and clarity, especially in distinct aspects of the clothing and production design. Objects hold up well in the shadowy areas of the penthouse and retain their depth with banding rarely showing up in any capacity. The movie features black levels of great depth that hold together nicely without exhibiting crush. The highlights of the movie are firm with no blooming or clipping. The movie itself has a cool palette that has nice depth on the screen. No damage or digital noise was detected that would detract from this transfer. Universal delivers a rock solid disc for this one.
Audio Quality
The film comes to Blu-Ray with an effective DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track which never falters. Surround channels get some surprising activity within this interior space including certain water effects, reverberating musical tones, and other elements of Nemo’s mounting psychosis. The soundscape fleshes out these environmental sounds to make the location feel more cavernous and three dimensional. The sparse implementation of low end adds some texture that enhances the atmosphere. The little bits of dialogue and sound effects are balanced well with the score where nothing gets lost. There is not a thing to complain about on the audio front. There are English SDH, Spanish and French subtitles provided.
Special Features
- Deleted Scenes: Four unused scenes totaling nearly six minutes are provided here featuring Nemo making a hideaway in the closet, deciphering a sign on the wall and more. The final scene presented seems as if it could be either an alternate ending or a dream sequence.
Final Thoughts
Inside is a feature which capably builds the claustrophobia and paranoia felt by its main character. The psychotic break experienced is a bit too drawn out for the audience, but Willem Dafoe proves to be a captivating presence throughout. The penthouse itself is a marvel of production design, and it is a visual treat to explore the space. The movie will prove to be a bit too heady and esoteric for most audience members, but arthouse fans should get something out of it. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has released a Blu-Ray featuring an excellent A/V presentation and small selection of special features. If you are a fan of the talent involved, you should at least seek it out to see where you fall on it. Recommended
Inside can be purchased on Blu-Ray directly through MovieZyng or various other online retailers.
