After Get Out’s success and the great traction that Us is getting, it’s no wonder that people are wondering what Peele will be up to afterward. We know that he has the revival of The Twilight Zone coming up, but what else can we expect?
Peele recently sat to speak at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, where he listed his influences in comedy, such as Steve Martin and Martin Lawrence, and Tim Burton for his storytelling. Peele also dove into the idea at that he had wanted to be a director, but that he originally thought it wasn’t for him after enrolling in Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York (which he later dropped out of two years later):
“The day I didn’t go to NYU, I said maybe [directing] wasn’t for me,” He then commented on his decision to leave, “I knew I had to leave,” Peele said. “But it’s not a classically lucrative industry, so it’s not like I can recommend that black people get into it because it doesn’t pay.”
Though Peele was already a household name before Get Out, Peele did reflect on coming to terms with the attention he’s been getting since releasing the wildly popular film:
“I don’t envy someone who gets famous overnight,” Peele cautioned. “The hardest part is being recognized. I used to think that being in the public eye gave you power. But all of a sudden, they have the power and can come up to you an hour into dinner.”
The upside, though; is being able to tell stories he wants to:
“The way I look at it,” he explained, “I get to cast black people in my movies. I feel fortunate to be in this position where I can say to Universal, ‘I want to make a $20 million horror movie with a black family.’ And they say yes.”
He continued:
“I don’t see myself casting a white dude as the lead in my movie. Not that I don’t like white dudes,” he said, nodding over to his moderator pal Roberts. “But I’ve seen that movie.” The line drew loud applause and shouts of agreement. “It really is one of the best greatest pieces of this story is feeling like we are in this time — a renaissance has happened and proven the myths about representation in the industry are false.”
